The Peabody Tanners (8-6-1) are now just one point away from qualifying for the state tournament following their 5-0 shutout win over Lynn Classical on Monday. Mark Cuoto led the way for Peabody with two goals, while Jonathan Alves, Zachary Silva and Noah Surman added one goal each. Jacob Zeuli and Troy Cappos combined for the shutout in net.
With the loss, Classical (5-9-1) will not be able to qualify for the state tournament.
St. John’s Prep 1, Everett 0
Steven Yakita scored the lone goal for the Eagles, who improved to 10-4-2. St. John’s will host Silver Lake on Sunday afternoon.
GIRLS SOCCER
Swampscott 6, Winthrop 2
Haley Bernhardt was the top scorer for the Big Blue on Monday, notching two goals in the win. Michela Agresti, Jaymie Caponigro, Maggie DiGrande and Kendra Fitzgerald each scored one goal.
Swampscott (13-1-1) will host Salem tomorrow afternoon.
Danvers 8, Lynn English 0
The Falcons improved to 13-3 after a shutout win, led by Sarah Unczur’s two goals. Lauren Clement, Teagan Gilliss, Sarah McCarriston, Kelly Connors, Jess Barthelmess and Abbi Clickstein each scored one goal for Danvers.
The Falcons will travel to Peabody to face off against the Tanners tomorrow afternoon.
Saugus 5, Salem 0
With a shutout on Monday, the Sachems improved to 9-6 and . Olivia Valente led the way with two goals, while Allie Kotkowski, Kylie Ronan and Shaylin Groark each scored one goal.
Saugus will play Gloucester on the road tomorrow afternoon.
Marblehead 9, Gloucester 1
The Magicians spread out the offense, getting goals from seven different players Monday. Gabriella Marks led the way with a hat trick, and Meeghan Cronin, Maeve Bostley, Meghan Ryan, Olivia Eddy, Kaelyn Attridge and Courtney Berry each added one. Bridget Schauder also played well in the midfield.
Newburyport 1, Bishop Fenwick 0
Emily Smith and Mary Gerdenich played well in the loss for the Crusaders (6-6-3). Fenwick will host North Reading on Thursday afternoon.
FIELD HOCKEY
Marblehead 1, Gloucester 0
In a battle for the Northeastern Conference title, the Magicians went into the game a point behind Gloucester, but emerged a point ahead of the Fishermen and in excellent position to capture the crown with one league game remaining.
Caroline Driscoll scored the only goal of the game on an assist from Ashley Stiles 15 minutes into the second half. Marblehead coach Linda Rice Collins also credited her entire defense, as well as midfielder Hadley Carlton and forwards Cricket Thompkins and Bel Sogoloff.
“The girls were thrilled with the win,” Rice Collins said. “We played extremely well. We cut to the ball and we were aggressive.”
The Magicians (12-1-3) still have one more matchup with rival Swampscott Thursday. While the two teams played to a scoreless tie earlier in the season, this time the Big Blue will have to play at Marblehead on Piper Field’s turf.
Bishop Fenwick 1, Medfield 0
The Crusaders (7-9-1) got one step closer to a tournament berth with a shutout win on Monday. Stefanie Libby scored the winning goal for Fenwick, who will play next on Thursday afternoon.
VOLLEYBALL
Ipswich 3, Swampscott 0
The Big Blue (7-9) fell in straight sets, 18-25, 21-25, 22-25. Leanne Nisbet notched five aces and six kills, while Taylor McBurney had three kills and three aces. Cassidy Ryan had one ace, five kills and eight digs and Claudia Mazariegos had one ace and four kills.
Swampscott is right back in action this evening when it hosts the Salem Witches.
