The Peabody girls volleyball team swept Classical, 3-0, at home Friday, with set scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-18.
Melissa Gray (10 kills) and Hannah Kemp (21 assists, four aces) led the efforts for the Tanners. Serena Laro contributed with eight kills, while Lexie Zammer had four kills.
“Classical’s girls were incredible defensively,” Peabody coach Lisa Keene said. “They had us playing hard the entire game. It was an exciting game for both teams.”
Soneta Srey led the Rams with 6 kills while Skylar Crayton, Maggie McHale and Leyani Anderson had two kills each. Srey had four blocks and three block assists, while Crayton had two blocks and three block assists and Anderson had two blocks and one block assist.
On the back line, Amanda Thoeun had 10 digs, while Alytah Noum had eight. Srey and Emma DeJoie had seven digs each. Classical’s (1-1) next match is on Monday when the Rams host Everett at 5 p.m.
Fenwick 3, Masco 0
The Crusaders rolled to their second win in as many days by scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-14. Molly Camelo led the team with nine kills and seven blocks, while Sam Mancinelli had 22 assists and three aces. Steph Bona added six kills and three aces.
Jennie Meagher contributed five kills and three blocks, and Julia Fusco and Joie Dillon had 13 digs each.
BOYS SOCCER
Salem 3, Bishop Fenwick 1
Salem (1-0-1) earned its first win of the season. Josiah Williams got scoring started for Salem when he found the net in the fifth minute to give the Witches an early 1-0 lead. Patrick Collins followed with a goal in the 20th minute to pad the lead. In the 30th minute, Derek Ramsey found the net to make it 3-0 Salem.
Fenwick’s John Mahoney scored late in the second half to make it a 3-1 final. “I thought we played well, but there’s always room for improvement,” Salem coach Mike Collins said. “I’ll take any win on the road.”
Lynnfield 2, Triton 0
The Pioneers won their season opener on Friday. The offense for Lynnfield was the story of the game as it controlled the ball and maintained possession for the majority of the contest. William Klotzbier’s goal in the 60th minute gave Lynnfield a 1-0 lead. Ian Ross found the net in the 70th minute to make it a 2-0 final in favor of Lynnfield. The Pioneers will visit Pentucket in their next game on Tuesday at 3:45.
GIRLS SOCCER
Lynnfield 6, Triton 0
The Pioneers scored 16 seconds into the game and never looked back as Lynnfield (1-1) cruised to its first win of the season. Grace Sperling scored in the game’s first minute to give Lynnfield the early lead. Liz Reed scored in the 9th minute, and Kate Mitchell found the net in the 16th to pad the lead to 3-0. Caroline Buckley scored in the 34th minute and Mitchell scored her second goal in the 36th minute. In the 60th minute, an own goal was scored off of Reed’s corner kick to make it a 6-0 final for Lynnfield. The Pioneers will host Pentucket on Tuesday.
“We came out pretty strong,” said Lynnfield coach Mark Vermont. “We tried to move the ball well and we had a lot of success getting the ball out wide.”
FIELD HOCKEY
Marblehead 1, Peabody 0
Anna Behrens scored the lone goal of the contest to give Marblehead (3-0) the win. Marblehead’s defense was the story in this one, with Carolyn Arthur, Bella Barbera, Alex Carlton and Katie Picariello working to keep Peabody off the scoreboard.
“They controlled the ball,” Marblehead coach Linda Rice Collins said of her players. “Peabody couldn’t penetrate past them and consequently my forwards were getting lost of movement on the ball.”
For Peabody, Sofia Rodriguez starred in net, making several big saves to keep the Tanners in the game. Mallory LeBlanc, Gianna Denisco, Caroline O’Neill and Katerina Betterncourt also turned in good performances for the Tanners. Sara Feinstein played well at sweeper and Emily Bellavance challenged Marblehead with her speed.
