Richie Mateo was the star of the day for the Lynn Tech baseball team on Monday, contributing heavily on the mound and at the plate in a 7-2 win over Pope John on the road in Everett. Mateo tossed a complete game four-hitter with 12 strikeouts, and was a dominant force on the mound according to Tech coach Mike Kenney.
“He was pretty dominant out there today for sure,” Kenney said. “We told him to go out there and be aggressive and throw strikes, and that’s just what he did. He pounded the zone all day and was just overpowering most of their guys. It was a very impressive outing.”
Mateo also had a stellar day at the plate, just missing the cycle with a single, a double, a triple and three RBI. Kenny Moore also had a solid day at the plate with two hits and two RBI.
The Tigers (7-9) will play another road game this afternoon against Greater Lawrence Tech.
BASEBALL
St. John’s Prep 6, St. Peter Marian 0
Pitchers Sean LeTarte and Jake Sanderson combined for a three-hit shutout on the mound, with LeTarte getting credit for the win. Sam Blizard and Frank DiOrio both hit home runs to pace the offense.
The Eagles (13-5) have a big matchup with St. Mary’s tonight at Fraser Field.
Malden 5, Melrose 1
Kyle Twomey tossed a complete-game four-hitter for Malden, with the lone run coming on a solo homer by Melrose’s Nick Cordeau in the top of the first inning. Malden went on to score all five of its runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks in part to hits from James Calo, Reid Kankel, Lou LoConte and Gabe Sanders.
Malden (7-12) will close out its regular season on Wednesday when it travels to Salem for a road game against the Witches.
SOFTBALL
St. Mary’s 6, Marblehead 2
St. Mary’s is now 16-1 after a win against a strong non-conference opponent on Monday. Mia Nowicki got the win on the mound, while freshman Talia Smaller hit her first varsity home run in the win.
The Spartans have a quick turnaround with a game against Archbishop Williams this afternoon.
Stoneham 4, Saugus 0
Caitlyn Wood allowed just five hits and fanned 11 batters in her seven innings of work. A Stoneham grand-slam in the top of the sixth with two outs proved to be the difference. Saugus mustered five hits on offense. Sadie DiCenso went 1-for-2 with a double and Alex Almquist was 1-for-2. DJ Munafo, Katie Italiano and Nystasia Rowe each notched a hit. “We just couldn’t get the key hits and they made all the plays,” Saugus coach Steve Almquist said. Saugus (8-9) hosts Winthrop on Wednesday.
Lynn Tech 20, Presentation of Mary 13
Theresa Mastropietro contributed on both sides of the ball for the Tigers on Monday, getting the win on the mound and going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Alondra Sanchez was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, Shyla Jackson hit a home run and Coral Gonzalez played a great defensive game at catcher.
The Tigers (4-9) will take on Northeast Tech this afternoon.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Marblehead 15, Hamilton-Wenham 4
Hadley Carlton had a massive eight-point game (six goals, two assists) to lead the way for Marblehead, while Grace Arthur had two goals and two assists. Caroline Driscoll and Niamh Healy each had two goals, Lydia Bongiorno had one goal and one assist and Amanda Gregory had five assists. Annie Migliore and Lucie Poulin each had one goal, while Annie Ronan and Sara Campbell each had one assist. Goalkeepers Maeve Caldwell and Lily DeRosier combined for 10 saves in the win for Marblehead (14-2).
Manchester-Essex 10, Peabody 9
Lauren Wolff led the way for Peabody with four goals, while Colleen Crotty contributed two goals. Chloe Gizzi and Olivia Kiricoples each had one goal and one assist, Kirsten Bradley had one goal and Catherine Manning had one assist. Manning, Alyssa Shashaty, Kelly Crotty and Carla Patania all played well defensively. Gianna Denisco made 12 saves for the Tanners (15-3).
BOYS LACROSSE
St. Mary’s 16, Greater Lowell 4
The Spartans punched their ticket to the postseason for only the second time in program history with a decisive win over the Gryphons. St. Mary’s sprinted out to a 4-0 lead after a quarter and didn’t look back.
Fenwick 18, Salem 6
Brian Harrington scored three goals and logged four assists and Zach Talbot added three goals and two assists as the Crusaders (8-10) kept their playoff hopes alive. Cam McCarthy added two goals and an assist, Chris Terry scored two goals and logged three assists, John Cataldo scored four goals and Derek DelVecchio added four goals and an assist. Matt Gorman and Robby Favuzza each logged an assist.
Winchester 12, Marblehead 8
Manning Sears led the way with four goals, Sam Cioffi added a pair, and Drew Cioffi and Sam Paquette added a goal apiece in the loss.
BOYS TENNIS
St. John’s Prep 5, Catholic Memorial 0
The Eagles got singles wins from Nick Salacci in first singles (6-0, 6-0), Jacob Salacci in second singles (6-2 ,6-1) and Mikey Prokopis in third singles (6-0, 6-0). Doubles wins came from the team of David Cunningham and Amal Raisingani (3-6, 6-1, 6-3) and the team of Jack Malowepszy and Carlton Reister (6-1, 6-2).
St. John’s (11-5) will take on St. John’s of Shrewsbury this afternoon.
BOYS TRACK
Commonwealth Athletic Conference meet
The Lynn Tech boys track team ran to a fourth-place finish at the CAC meet Saturday. Akeem Blake took first in the high jump and second in the 100-meter dash. Jamie James won the 200 and finished second in the discus. Brandon Touy finished third in the 800, and the 4×100 relay team of Blake, James, Touy and Robert Woodley placed second. Brandon Mendez finished third in the 2-miles.
GIRLS TRACK
CAC meet
The Tech girls also ran to a fourth-place finish, and Makalay Handley was named the meet MVP, winning the shot put and discus.
Also doing well for Tech was Michayla Lawrence in the 100, coming in second. The 4×100 relay team of Handley, Lawrence, Jayden Thackson and Franciny Lichtenberg placed fourth, and the team of Massa Freeman, Zenyvette Gonzales, Lisa Chamba and Handley placed fifth in the 4×400.
Marblehead 74, Malden 62
The Magicians had a great day in the field events on Monday afternoon, with Hannah Flores winning the discus (91 feet, 1 inch), Corinne Ahern taking the javelin (93-8), Sarah Caulfield winning the triple jump (32-3) and Gabriella Mark winning the long jump (16-6 1/4). Marblehead also got a couple wins in the running events, as Chase Davies won the 100-meter (12.7 seconds) and Ana Hecht won the 800 (2:33.8).
With the win, the Magicians improve to 5-2 on the year.
