The Shrewsbury girls’ hockey team was a little too much for Marblehead to handle on Sunday, as they fell, 5-1, at home.
The Magicians tied the game at one with a goal from Bella Peters (assist Hadley Woodfin), but from that point on, it was all Colonials. Down 3-1, two more quick goals from Shrewsbury in the second put the game out of reach for Marblehead.
The Magicians actually outshot Marblehead, 24-23, in the loss.
Masco 3, Peabody 1
The Tanners jumped out to a quick lead in the first as Jess Robert scored with assists from Elise Murphy and Kaydee Purcell. But the Chieftains were able to tie it up with nine seconds left in the period.
Peabody/Lynnfield held Masco through the second period, but the Chieftains dominated possession in the third. Abigail Buckley was strong in the net for the Tanners in the loss.
Bishop Fenwick 3, Oakmont 0
The Crusaders topped Oakmont at home behind a shutout from sophomore goalie Marina Marabella.
Lexi McNeil, Amanda Blanchette, and Caitlin Carney all scored for Bishop Fenwick (6-8-1), and Lauren Coccoluto helped out with two assists.
Beverly 5, Medford 1
The Panthers cruised past Medford on Saturday. Ally Cabral got her first career win between the pipes for Beverly. Izzy Primack led the Panthers with two goals and an assist.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Amesbury 59, Swampscott 47
Down 13 points at the half, the Big Blue went on a run to close the gap to four points at one point in the third, but Amesbury closed it out in the fourth to come away with the win.
Nick Scibelli, Venantius Phillip and Nate Howard all contributed 11 points, with Howard’s coming in the form of three three-pointers and a layup off the bench. Phillip also had five defensive rebounds, seven assists, three steals and a block in a good all-around effort. Jack Porter chipped in with nine points and Brandon Byrne added five points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Beverly 66, Masco 50
A balanced scoring attack led Beverly past Masco on Sunday afternoon on the road.
Sam Traicoff led the Panthers with 14 points. Ryan Garrity added 13 points and seven boards. Kyle Coughlin scored 12, Pat Gavin added 10, and Hugh Calice chipped in with eight points and seven boards.
The Panthers (10-5) need just one more win in their remaining six games to qualify for the tournament.
New Mission 70, St. John’s Prep 66
The Eagles were edged by New Mission at Northeastern University on Sunday. Spencer Danforth led the Eagles with 17 points, while Justin Connolly added nine and Alec Buresh chipped in with seven.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Bishop Fenwick 48, Fenway 30
The Crusaders traveled down to Northeastern University to take part in the MLK Invitational on Sunday, and came away with a big win that qualified them for a spot in the tournament.
Senior captain Colleen Corcoran led the Crusaders (11-3) with a double-double, scoring 11 points, pulling down 10 rebounds and swiping three steals. Fellow senior captain Ellen Fantozzi added seven points and four assists. Melissa MacKenzie chipped in with four points and five rebounds, and Jennie Meagher added eight points and seven rebounds.
SWIMMING
Bishop Fenwick 95, Austin Prep 75
The Crusaders captured the Catholic Central League title with a win over previously undefeated Austin Prep, sweeping all 11 events to finish the season with a perfect record.
The 200 medley relay team of Catherine Christuk, Rowan Emerson, Emily Ambeliotis, Garrett Collins, the 200 freestyle team of Emerson, Collins, Addie Laurencelle and Connor Christuk, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Ambeliotis, Laurencelle, Catherine Christuk and Connor Christuk grabbed first place.
Connor Christuk was a double winner in the 200 freestyle (2:01.42) and 100 fly (59.33), as was Laurencelle in the 50 freestyle (24.73) and 100 freestyle (54.40). Sophia Lumino won in the 200 individual medley (2:15.91) and Catherine Christuk took the 500 freestyle (5:26.50).
Emerson and Austin Prep’s Nick Marchetti battled in the 100 breaststroke, resulting in a tie for first place (1:09.45).
WRESTLING
St. John’s
The Eagles traveled out to Western Mass. to take on four teams, coming away with a 59-15 win over Dean Tech, 84-0 win over Pathfinder, 53-21 win over Hampden Charter and 72-12 win over Agawam.
Nine wrestlers went 4-0 for St. John’s Prep, including Ryan Garlitz (106), Will Grady (113), Malcolm Mitchell, (120), Zach Alexander (126), John McNaught (132), Hunter Costa (138), David Yepez (170), Spencer Jenkins (182) and Jay Carnevale (285). The Eagles are now 35-1 on the season.
