On a rainy Thursday afternoon the Marblehead girls lacrosse team’s offense fired on all cylinders en route to a 17-1 win over Danvers at home. The Magicians got off to a fast start, carrying a 10-1 lead the midway point. From there, the game was in Marblehead’s control. Amanda Gregory paced the Magicians offense with eights assists. Hadley Carlton scored five goals, while Niamh Healy (one ground ball, one draw control), Lydia Bongiorno (two goals, four ground balls, one draw control), Grace Arthur (six assists, one five ground balls, five draw controls), Caroline Driscoll (six goals, one assists), Lucie Poulin (two goals, four ground balls, two draw controls), Emma Bushman (one goal, one ground ball), Annie Ronan (one goal), Sara Campbell (one interception) and Annie Migliore (one assist, three ground balls) each contributed to the winning effort. Goalie Maeve Caldwell made five saves on six shots. With the win, the Magicians, the Northeastern Conference champions, improve to 15-2 on the season, 5-0 in NEC North play.
BASEBALL
Marblehead 7, Swampscott 6 (F/6)
In a back and forth game that saw five lead changes, the Magicians earned their xth win of the season. Chris Gally got the win on the mound, in relief. James McCarthy escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning to earn the save. Marblehead’s Drew Gally went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Chris Gally went 1-for-4 with a triple and scored two runs. Steve Pappas went 1-for-2 with an RBI single. The win puts Marblehead (11-8) in the championship game of the Rockport Tournament, which will be played on Saturday at Evans Field in Rockport. The Magicians then host St. John’s Prep on Sunday in the Pete Frates Game for ALS Awareness.
“We’ll look at each game and each different situation to see where we’re at,” Magicians coach Mike Giardi said. “We’ll get guys a lot of guys in and out on Sunday against the Prep. That’ll be a big tune-up for us moving into the state tournament.”
