The St. Mary’s boys basketball team improved to 9-2 on Monday night with a 56-26 win over Archbishop Williams in Braintree.
Jalen Echevarria and Stephen Fama led the way with 13 points each, followed by Jon Mercado who logged a double-double with 12 points and 11 assists. “We didn’t shoot the ball well,” said coach Dave Brown, “but we played one of our better games defensively, and scored a lot of points off turnovers.”
St. Mary’s is home Friday against Arlington Catholic.
BOYS HOCKEY
Swampscott 2, Weston 0
At Rivers Rink in Weston, the Big Blue, 12-1-0, won their 11th straight game in a non-leaguer. Andrew Dove and Louis Olivieri netted goals to power Swampscott to the win. Goalie Dan Johnson earned the shutout win in net. The Big Blue return to league action next Monday against Gloucester.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lynn Tech 40, Chelsea 36
With the win, the Tigers are back to .500 at 6-6 on the season. Freshman point guard Alondra Sanchez led the way with 16 points, while Jamila Constantine and Arianna Anaya each scored 11 points. Malvelis Hernandez and Annmarie Teixeira anchored Tech’s defense. The Tigers visit PMA on Tuesday.
BOYS TRACK
Swampscott 61, Winthrop 25
Gloucester 48, Winthrop 33
At Swampscott, the Big Blue raised its record to 4-1 with the win while Winthrop dropped to 1-5.
Swampscott’s winners were Isaiah Bascon in the high jump (6-0), Joseph Varghese, 55 hurdles (9.2), Harry Parker, 600 (1:42.1), Thomas McDevitt, 1,000 (2:56.2), Jack Dennehy, mile (5:04.7), and the 4×100 relay (3:58.9).
For Winthrop, it was Andrew Mcgrail, shotput (41-2 3/4), Dave Navarro, 55 (6.8); Taylor St. George, 300 (42.0), and Nikolas Beshere, 2-mile (11:19.7).
In the second part of the meet, Navarro of Winthrop won the high jump (5-2) and 55 (6.8), Mcgrail the shotput (41-2 3/4), and Beshere the 2-mile (11:19.7).
For Gloucester (2-3), Andrew Topouzoglou won the 55 hurdles (10.6), Christian Sanfilippo the 300 (40.7), Lorenzo Furlani the 600 (1:39.1), Kyle Manley the 1000 (2:45.6), and Christopher MacDonald the mile (5:05.7).
GIRLS TRACK
Swampscott 56, Winthrop 30
Winthrop 45, Gloucester 41
At Swampscott, the Big Blue are 4-1. Winners were Maisie Vasquez, shotput (33-5½), Kendall Rhodes, 55 hurdles (9.6), Molly Frauenholz, 55 (8.0), Ashley Marston, 1000 (3:34.2), Anna Conti, mile (6:30.5).
Winthrop’s Regina Garufo won the 300 (47.1), Heidi Benson the 600 (1:52.2), Camilla Miranda-Llovera, 2-mile (13.23) and the 4×100 relay (4:40.1).
Fiona MacPhail and Anna Cilley tied for the high jump (4-8).
Against Gloucester, Winthrop got firsts from Gianna Massa, shotput (33-2½), Garufo the 300 (47.1), Benson the 600 (1:52.2), MacPhail the 1000 (4:02.2) and the relay (4:40.1).
Gloucester’s winner were Sierra Rudolph, high jump (5-4) and the 55 hurdles (9.9), Kaitlin Marques, 55 (7.7), Lucy Garberg, mile (6:20.8), Carly Curcuru, 2-mile (13.18).
