By MIKE ALONGI
It all came down to the final event in the pool on Thursday night, and the Lynn Classical swim team came out victorious after beating Peabody, 92-91, in a thriller. The Rams were down 87-82 going into the 400-yard freestyle relay, meaning they needed to take first and third place in order to pull out the win. They did just that, with the team of Carly Mendonca, Jacob Lang, Elias Bakas and Harrison Seitz finishing in first place and the team of Alaina Gridley, Noah Corbishley, Rachel Brennan and Gabriela Marquez finishing in third place.
“It was a total team victory for us today,” said Classical coach Denise Silva. “It was really won by everybody. Not only were the first and second-place finishes important, but we needed all of those third, fourth and fifth-place finishes just as much. Everyone contributed tonight.”
The Rams had another great performance on the night, with Sarah Sirois breaking her own Lynn girls high school diving record with a score of 283.45. She initially set the record last season. Classical swept the diving event, with Alex Pedro and Ciara Collins finishing second and third, respectively.
Other winners for Classical were Mendonca in the 100 butterfly and the team of Pedro, Lang, Bakas and Eric Macorri in the 200 freestyle relay.
The Rams (4-3) are back in the pool on Thursday against rival Lynn English.
First-place finishes for the Tanners included the 200-yard medley relay (William Connolly, Millie Teague, Cailin Currie, and Conor McCarthy), Kirsten Currie (100- and 200-yard freestyle, achieving an MIAA State Championship qualifying time in both events), Conor McCarthy (200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke), Connolly (100-yard freestyle), Cailin Currie (500-yard freestyle), and Cana Teague (100-yard backstroke, achieving an MIAA North Sectional Championship qualifying time).
“This was a great meet for our athletes,” said Peabody coach Maureen Shea. “Most of the races came down to the official’s judgement at the finish. They have developed greatly as both individual athletes with their best times and championship qualifying times, and as a team.”
The Tanners will next compete against Revere at the Torigian Family YMCA on January 24.
