It was a close game in the first half, but the Marblehead girls lacrosse team exploded for nine goals in the second half to notch a win on the road in Peabody, 16-7, on Wednesday. Lydia Bongiorno had four goals for the Magicians (17-1), while Grace Arthur scored three goals and added two assists. Hadley Carlton and Caroline Driscoll each scored three goals, Amanda Gregory had two goals and four assists and Lucie Poulin finished with one goal and two assists. Goalie Brittany Lydon had nine saves in the win.
For Peabody (12-3), Emma Rigol was the top scorer with three goals and one assist. Lauren Wolff had three goals, while Amanda Bradley notched one goal and one assist. Goalie Gianna Denisco had 12 saves in the loss.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Swampscott 5, Gloucester 2
The Big Blue (9-5) qualified for the state tournament with a win over Gloucester on Wednesday. Ellie Wright led the way with three goals, while Samantha Blank and Maggie DiGrande each had one goal. Goalie Claire Powell had a great game with 13 saves.
“We’re really excited to get into the tournament,” said Swampscott coach Al Eaton. “Our defense has been solid all year, our goalie has been great and our offense is starting to find a groove now.”
Fenwick 11, Hamilton-Wenham 8
A trio of four-point performances from Merry Harrington (4 goals), Colleen Corcoran (2 goals, 2 assists) and Tori Hernandez (2 goals, 2 assists) led the Crusaders (13-2) by the host Generals.
Brigid Waldron, Hannah Durkin and Molly Camelo added solo tallies for Fenwick.
BOYS LACROSSE
Pentucket 14, Swampscott 4
A forgettable first half doomed the Big Blue (9-8) who played much better over the final period of a defeat at the hands of the visiting Sachems. Andrew Dove had two goals and an assist for Swampscott, while Jack Herlihy (assist) and Emory Wollerscheid added solo tallies in the loss.
Bishop Fenwick 13, Mystic Valley 4
Fenwick senior Chris Napolitano recorded his 300th career point in the win.
BOYS TENNIS
Classical 3, Salem 2
The Rams (9-7) concluded their regular season with a grind-it-out win over the visiting Witches, highlighted by a doubles sweep, featuring triumphs from Patrick Gibb/Simon Kazimierczyk (6-3, 6-4) and Gerry Ennis/Alex Chea (6-3, 3-6, 6-2), the latter clinching the match.
Moses Ba tacked on a 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles for Classical.
Masconomet 3, Marblehead 2
The Magicians dropped all three singles matches, but we able to sweep the doubles matches on Wednesday. The team of freshmen Dave Grenader and Dan Livtak won the first match, 6-2, 6-1, and the team of junior captains Sam Orenstein and Garrett Tully took the second match, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4.
St. John’s Prep 4, St. Mary’s 1
Brady Ryan battled from behind to notch a win over the Prep’s Nick Salacci in first singles, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, to give the Spartans (14-4) their only point of the day.
GIRLS TENNIS
St. Mary’s 5, O’Bryant 0
In their final match of the season, the Spartans got singles wins from Ana de Bernardo in first singles (10-7), Christina Hallisey in second singles (10-2) and Mia Nikolakopoulos in third singles (10-4).
In doubles play, the team of Caitlin Foley and Haleigh King took the first match, 11-9, and the team of Adelina Katzounos and Taylor Hogan took the second match, 10-0.
The Spartans (6-14) wasted no time in naming the team captains for 2017 now that the season is over. Coach Jim McHugh announced that King, Foley and Nikolakopoulos will be the three captains for next season.
English 3, Winthrop 2
A doubles sweep, featuring wins from the teams of Jasmin Chhim/Victoria Say (6-2, 5-7, 6-2) and Jennifer Benavides/Raymi Ramirez (7-5, 6-2) helped lead the host Bulldogs by the Vikings. Molly Nhiv scored a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win at third singles for English who finished the regular season with a 9-7 record, earning them a spot in the upcoming Division 1 North sectional tournament.
North Reading 4, Swampscott 1
The Big Blue finished a stretch of tough non-league opponents with a loss at home to North Reading on Wednesday. Vivien Gere was the lone winner for the Big Blue in first singles, but it wasn’t easy.
After taking the first set, 6-1, Gere dropped the second set, 0-6. In a super-tiebreaker third set, Gere battled for a 10-7 win to take the match after about two hours of play.
“It was just really good tennis,” said Swampscott coach Nina Rogers. “It really could’ve gone either way, so I’m glad Vivien could get a win against such a quality opponent.”
Now sitting at 8-9 with two games remaining (Saugus on Friday, Revere next Tuesday), Swampscott will most likely need to win out to make the tournament.
“We’ve just got to keep playing good tennis, and hopefully that will be enough to get us in,” Rogers said.
Marblehead 4, Masco 1
No. 1 Michelle Shub (6-1, 6-1), No. 2 Megan Ryan (6-2, 6-0) and No. 3 Julia Channing (6-4, 6-1) all notched wins for the Magicians, as did second doubles team Simone Likterov and Lindsay Walker (7-5, 6-2).

Swampscott 75, Salem 61
Swampscott 94, Lynn English 42
Colman Donovan was a triple-winner for the Big Blue, winning the high jump (five feet, eight inches), the long jump (20-8) and the 100-meter hurdles (16.2 seconds). Themo Liakopoulos was the only other multiple winner for Swampscott, winning the javelin (142-5) and the discus (103-5).
Other winners for the Big Blue were Raian Flynn in the shot put (40-2), Dante Ceccarelli in the triple jump (36-9 1/2), Matt Stephan in the 400-hurdles (67.5), Thomas McDevitt in the 800 (2:09), Evan Lippman in the one-mile (5:21) and Oliver Daniels-Koch in the two-mile (11:12).
Fenwick 70, Spellman 66
The Crusaders improved to 9-0, clinching the Catholic Central League dual-meet championship. Simon Vinci was a double winner with the shot put (42-10) and discus (104-4) while teammate Shawn Carlson prevailed in both the 800 (2:08) and two-mile (10:51.9).
Fenwick featured solo wins from Oliver Botthof (long jump; 19-9 ½), Jack Bowers (400 hurdles; 61.2), Tony Maida (mile; 5:02.3), Colin Norton (100m; 10.9) and Mitch Rivers (400; 53.1).
GIRLS TRACK
Fenwick 70, Spellman 66
Sydney Packard and Grace Foley won two events apiece, leading the Crusaders (9-0) past the visiting Cardinals while clinching the CCL championship in the process.
The former took first in the 400 (63.1) and two-mile (13:41) while the latter prevailed in the 800 (2:39.8) and the mile (5:44.1).
Fenwick’s 4×400 relay team, comprised of Christine Deschenes, Kate DelTorchio, Emily Graumann and Jordyn Arnott combined on a winning time of 4:39.7.
The Crusaders had solo victories from Ali DiBiase (high jump; 4-4), Olivia Juneau (400m; 71.3), Carolyn Tracy (shot put; 29-10) and Christina Zoldak (discus; 77.5) while Emily Smith finished runner-up in both the 100 and 200.
