The Marblehead boys’ lacrosse team locked up second place in the NEC North and a
playoff spot with a 13-6 win in Peabody Tuesday night. The Magicians, who improved to 7-8 with the win, have three games left in the regular season.
Captain P. J. Roy said that the coaching staff has emphasized the need for quick starts, and the team came out strong and fast against the Tanners.
“With that win, we lock up second place, which we’re happy about,” Roy said. “I think that all the pieces are there to be a good team, a good playoff team; we just have to work to hit our stride. We’ve finished some games well, we have to start out strong too, like we did tonight.”
Andy Clough led the winners with five goals and an assist, Sam Paquette had a hat trick and Andrew McGurrin scored two. Drew Cioffi, Sam Cioffi and Manning Sears also scored for the winners.
Marblehead coach John Wilkens said it was good to come out of Peabody with a win, and have a good game on both ends of the field.
“It was a good win, we worked everybody in. One of the things we’ve been talking about is coming out of the gate faster, and we did that tonight,” Wilkens said. “We’ve put ourselves in the hole against some very good teams over the last few weeks, and that wasn’t the case tonight.”
For Peabody (6-10), Devin Hennessey led the way with three goals. Cam Cordaro had one goal and one assist, while Tim January and Steven Ell each scored one goal. Nick Merryman and Aiden Santerre each had one assist. Goalie Austin Leggett notched 10 saves and also added an assist.
Matignon 9, Saugus 5
The Sachems held a 5-2 lead at the half, but things fell apart for Saugus after the break. Saugus coach Rob Scuzzarella said that the five penalties the Sachems took in the fourth quarter cost them the game.

Beverly 9, Wellesley 7
The Panthers came back from a 4-1 deficit at halftime thanks in part to a six-goal third quarter to notch a win over a tough Wellesley team on Tuesday.
Sam Abate led Beverly in scoring with four goals and three assists. His fourth goal was also the 100th goal of his high school career. Matt Rawding added two goals, while Jordan Rawding, Kevin Flaherty and Kyle Chouinard each scored one goal. Spencer Hunter had one assist and goalie Kevin Morency notched five saves.
