For the second year in a row, the Lynn Classical girls tennis team won the Northeastern Conference North Division title after a 4-1 win over Danvers at home on Thursday. With the win, the Rams finish the regular season with a 16-1 record.
Classical got wins from Meredith MacDonald in second singles, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, and Lizzie Troisi in third singles, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles play, the team of Shea Dunnigan and Briana Silva took the first match, 6-3, 6-1, and the team of Ashley Noel and Zoe Raymond won the second match, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-1.
The lone win for Danvers came in first singles after a battle between Shannon Veilleux and Classical’s Anna Athanasopoulos. In a three-setter, Veilleux took the match, 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7).
With the regular season over, the Rams will now sit back and wait to see who they draw in the Division 1 North tournament.
GIRLS TENNIS
Lynnfield 5, North Andover 0
The Pioneers improved to 13-1 behind singles wins from Sarah Mezini in the first match, 6-0, 6-1, Katie Nevils in the second match, 6-0, 6-1, and Amanda Stelman in the third match, 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles play, the team of Camie Foley and Olivia Skelley took the first match, 6-0, 6-0, and the team of Hayley Timmons and Allison Carey won the second match, 6-1, 6-2.
BOYS TENNIS
Beverly 5, Winthrop 0
Beverly (13-0) remained undefeated after a shutout win over Winthrop on Thursday. Peter Coletti got the win in first singles, 6-0, 6-0, Dylan LeBlanc took the second match, 6-1, 6-0, and Christian Goodwin took the third match, 6-4, 6-1.
The team of Colin Oliver and Frederico Poncini won the first doubles match, 6-2, 7-6, and the team of Skyler Crean and Kyle Martin battled to win the second doubles match, 7-5, 2-6, 10-6.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Swampscott 14, Saugus 5
Isabelle Cilley led the way for the Big Blue (10-5) with four goals, while Ellie Wright finished with two goals. Emma Sutherland, Maggie DiGrande, Grace DiGrande, Ocean Crawley, Nikki Rosa, Kayla Kornitsky, Olivia Fillenworth and Caroline Kinne each scored one goal.
Goalie Claire Powell had 10 saves in the win.
BOYS LACROSSE
Swampscott 18, Saugus 7
The Big Blue picked up their tenth win of the season with a conference victory over Saugus. Swampscott is already guaranteed of a share of the NEC South and a playoff spot.
Swampscott improved to 10-7 overall, and 8-1 in the conference. Coach Todd Pierce said he gave the boys a talking to at halftime and they came out and ran away with the game in the second half.
“We were kind of getting away from team play, and playing an individual game, which we can’t do,” Pierce said. “We changed how we were playing in the second half and came up with a big conference victory.”
Andrew Dove had four goals and three assists for the Blue, Jack Herlihy scored twice and had three assists, and Jake Baldwin sank a pair of goals.
The Sachems got tallies from Jack Trainor, Nick Sanderson, Brian Groark, Christian Heffernan and two from Steven Wright. Drew Worthley had four assists for Saugus.
Beverly 14, Melrose 13
It was a great back-and-forth game between two very good lacrosse teams, and the Panthers held on to win.
Tied at the half, Beverly scored six times in the third to take the lead for good. Melrose scored twice in the final five minutes to get within one, but midfielder Harrison Gallagher forced a turnover on Melrose’s final possession to seal the win.
Jordan Rawding led all scorers with four goals with two assists. Hunter Spencer (1 goal, 4 assists), Matt Rawding (3 goals), Nick DiLuiso (2 goals, 1 assist) and Keegan Kolbert (2 goals) also had big nights for Beverly.
Revere 18, Malden 4
The Patriots had no trouble securing their ninth win in a row with an offensive outburst at home on senior night.
Masconomet 9, Peabody 5
Mason Zeuli led the way for the Tanners (6-11) with two goals, while Tim January and Nick Merryman each had one goal and one assist. Connor McCarron added the final goal, and Devin Hennessey and Cam Cordero each had one assist.
BASEBALL
Lynn Classical 9, Mansfield 7
The Rams (9-7) got big offensive days from several players, with David Barnard (2-for-3), Herbie Newton (1-for-2) and Andre Gaudet (1-for-2) each notching two RBI and scoring a run. Matt Lauria went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Matt Stanley got the win on the mound for Classical, giving up six runs (three earned) with two strikeouts over five innings of work. Sean Dean came in for the save, giving up one unearned run on two hits in two innings.
Saugus 8, Brighton 7
The Sachems rallied from a 6-1 deficit to win a close game in the top of the seventh inning on the road on Thursday. Trailing 7-5 in the top of the seventh, Kyle Autilio got the rally started with an RBI double. Patrick Murray followed with an RBI double to tie the game. After Murray advanced to third base, Colby Murphy dropped down a successful suicide squeeze bunt to score Murray and give the Sachems an 8-7 lead.
Jimmy Alcott, who pitched the final three innings in relief to get the win, shut down the Brighton bats in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win. Over his three innings, he gave up just one run on two hits.
SOFTBALL
Saugus 15, Manchester-Essex 0 (F/5)
Shannon Gayron got the win on the mound for Saugus (12-5), giving up just two hits and striking out four batters in five shutout innings of work. The win improves Gayron’s season record to 3-1.
On the offensive end, Victoria Benoit went 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Jillian Cooper went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Freshman Emma Howard also went 2-for-3 with three RBI on a three-run home run.
Swampscott 15, Lynn English 2 (F/5)
Hannah Leahy (2-for-3), Ashley Bucklin (1-for-2) and Maisie Vasquez (1-for-2) each knocked in two RBI in the win for the Big Blue, while Olivia Cooke went 3-for-3.
Riley Lord got the win on the mound, pitching all five innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits.
Marblehead 12, Salem 0 (F/6)
Madi Ernst struck out eight batters for Marblehead in a no-hitter on Friday, lifting the Magicians to a win and a 13-3 record.
On the offensive end, Sarah Bornstein had a single, a double and three RBI, Olivia Fusigni had a single, a home run and two RBI and Sammy Treff was 2-for-4 with a single and a double.
