The Saugus boys hockey team gave everything it had in the championship game of the Kasabuski Classic Tuesday at Kasabuski Rink, but fell in overtime, 4-3, to Medford.
Saugus’ Adam Rodrigues opened the scoring in the first period, and the Sachems scored a power play goal later in the period to take a 2-0 lead as Brenden Patterson sent Brendan Ronan’s rebound past the Medford goaltender.
Medford tied it up early in the third, but Saugus’ Ian Worthley found Nick Moore in front of the net and Moore put the Sachems back on top. The lead didn’t last long as Medford tied it up, and despite some scoring chances late, the Sachems couldn’t take back the lead.
The game is officially scored a tie, so the Sachems remain undefeated at 4-0-1.
Lynnfield 6, Portland, Maine 1
The Pioneers, coming off of their first loss of the year Monday, were challenged by coach Jon Gardner to respond to Monday’s defeat emphatically in the consolation game of the Kasabuski Classic.
“The good teams don’t allow for losing streaks to develop. Our guys took that to heart (today),” said Gardner, who was understandably curious as to how his team would perform after a misleading, 4-1 loss to Medford in the opening round.
The undermanned Bulldogs proved overwhelmed from the opening puck drop, allowing Lynnfield to a 3-0 lead after the first period.
Tom Powers, Johnny Percoskie and Joey Mack scored to break it wide open by the 2:52 mark.
“We took into account that they lost a captain to injury yesterday and a rough travel schedule,” said Gardner of Portland, who traveled back home after a 3-1 loss to tournament-host Saugus. “We knew we had to get on them early and often and the guys executed the game plan.”
In the middle frame, Will Farofoli and Tyler Murphy had respective finishes before Mack capped the Pioneers output late in the final period. Mason Martell’s goal at the 1:41 mark broke the combined bid shutout from Dave Langone, Aiden Kelley and Joe Breslow.
Winthrop 10, Peabody 2
Winthrop senior Charlie Page scored four goals to lead the Vikings to victory in the consolation game.
Winthrop led 2-1 after one period and then put the game away with six goals in the second period. The Vikings lost to North Reading, 4-1, in the first round of the tournament. Peabody dropped its opener against Melrose, 2-1.
The Tanners (0-3) had goals from Nick Merryman and Connor McCarron. Jack McKelvey, Tim January, Chris Gillen and Nick Capillo each had an assist. Tyler Marley, Dean Paulson, Gene August, Chris Finn, Steve Holgerson and Luke Evangelista also scored for Winthrop.
