Codi Butt scored the game-winner for St. Mary’s 12 seconds into overtime.
By Katie Morrison and Scot Cooper
Tied at the end of regulation, Codi Butt wouldn’t let the drama continue much longer for the Spartans, as she scored just 12 seconds into overtime, the second of her two goals, to lead the St. Mary’s girls lacrosse team past Cardinal Spellman on Saturday, 9-8.
Coach K.C. Butt said that while the game probably shouldn’t have been as close as it was, a win’s a win.
Maggie Flaherty and Kaylin Deschenes netted two apiece, and Liz Weisse, Mady Hentosh and Sophya Fuccione added one each. Brittany McPherson was strong in the net, as usual, but trouble in transition and untimely turnovers led to her facing more shots than she should have.
Ellie Martin was also a huge part of the win. Usually an attacker, Martin was called on to reinforce the defense as Hentosh moved up to attack, and Martin played “fantastic,” according to Butt.
At 8-7, the Spartans need two wins in their final three game to clinch a tournament berth. They’ll take on Archbishop Williams at home on Monday, a team they’ve lost to earlier this season, and will face Winthrop and Greater Lowell, two teams they’ve beat, to wrap up the season.
Fenwick 17, Archbishop Williams 8
Merry Harrington, who was just named the Catholic Central League co-MVP, scored six times as the Crusaders improved to 11-2. Tori Hernandez scored three, Molly Camelo added three goals and Colleen Corcoran added two. Alex Butler played a strong game on defense for Fenwick.
BOYS LACROSSE
Swampscott 10, Georgetown 9
The Big Blue got a goal from Jack Herlihy with 13 seconds left in regulation to knock off Georgetown Saturday afternoon. The Big Blue trailed by a pair at halftime, but surged ahead in the fourth quarter.
The Royals tied the game at 9-9 with just under two minutes to go, setting the stage for Herlihy’s heroics. Swampscott coach Todd Pierce said the team came out and played a high energy game against a good team all for the full 48 minutes.
“That was a great game, both teams played hard, both teams played well, that’s what high school lacrosse is supposed to be,” Pierce said. “Great effort again by our guys today.”
Herlihy and Jake Baldwin each had a pair of goals, and junior Andrew Dove buried three. Nick Kersten, Jake Roberts, and Brendan Laundry also scored for Swampscott (9-5).
Peabody 14, Danvers 4
The Tanners (6-9) got big games from Tyler Flynn, who scored four goals and logged an assist, and Aidan Santerre, who scored three times and logged three assists. SOFTBALL
Malden 4, Classical 2
The Rams couldn’t get the bats going on Saturday. Emma Dejoie scored a run on a passed ball, and Kaitlin Marcinko came around on an error, but that’d be all Classical could manage.
