Sisson’s Yvanna Masse drives to the hoop as the Drewicz defense chases her down.
The 39th Annual Lynn Elementary Basketball Tournament kicked off on Thursday at Pickering Middle School with a slate of four first-round games.
All of the day’s contest were in the girls’ division, with the Ford Falcons taking on the Connery Celtics to kick off the yearly tournament. Ford was able to pull off the 17-5 victory behind the stellar play of Ahjeanee Hyacinthe, who put up 14 points. Connery’s high scorers were Esther Paliy and Leena Pheun. Ford will play Cobbet next Thursday at 3:15 p.m.
Game 2 pitted Division 2 rivals Tracy and Washington against each other in a back-and-forth game that was not decided until the last two minutes. In the end, Washington was able to hold on for the 15-12 victory.
Washington’s well rounded attack was led by high scorers Dakota Curry and Matty Laurino. Nasla Pujols added six points for Tracy.
Washington’s next opponent will be Harrington, and the two will square off on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
In more Division 2 action, Sisson defeated Drewicz, 21-4. Drewicz’s tough defense held Sisson scoreless for the first 11 minutes of the second half, but Sisson’s balanced offense proved to be too much in the end.
Yvanna Masse and Alondra Vilorio chipped in six points apiece for the Eagles. Jenny Merlos and Lindsay Perez were the high scorers for Drewicz.
Sisson takes on Hood this Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
The last game of the evening was a Division 3 contest between Brickett and Lynn Woods. Played before a capacity crowd, the game was not short on excitement.
After leading by two at the half, Lynn Woods found themselves down three points with less than a minute to play after standout point guard Brynn Bullock (eight points) was sidelined with an ankle injury earlier in the half. When Bullock reentered the game, she immediately made an impact and cut the lead to one. After scrappy play and missed opportunities by both teams, Lynn Woods found themselves down one, under their opponent’s basket with 10.8 seconds to play. Bullock received the inbound pass and drove up the court where she was stopped by Brickett’s stifling defense. She passed to fellow guard Kateiri Cutone at the foul line who sank the open jumper as time expired to give the Wolves a thrilling 12-11 victory. Brickett center, Jadylis Sanchez (11 points) was outstanding both offensively and defensively. Lynn Woods advances to play Sewell-Anderson Saturday at 4:15 p.m.
Action resumes on Friday at Pickering beginning at 3:15 p.m, when Callahan takes on Ford in boys’ division play. At 4:30, the Drewicz boys will face off against Harrington. Following that game, the Sisson and Hood boys will square off. The Lincoln-Thomson girls will take on Shoemaker in the evening’s finale at 7.
All games are open to the public and admission is just $1.
