Swampscott’s Dan Johnson stopped 27 shots Saturday in the Big Blue’s win over Beverly
By SCOT COOPER
It was not the Big Blue hockey team’s prettiest game of the season, according to head coach Gino Faia, but Swampscott will take Saturday’s 6-4 win over Beverly, which moved the team to 15-2-0.
“We hadn’t beaten them since 2009, when we won the division, we were a little sloppy early, but we settled down and played better in the second and third,” Faia said. “We had a good finish. A win is a win and we’ll take the two points and move forward.”
Defenseman Dom Codispoti scored twice and dished out two assists, Mike Johnson had two goals and an assist, and his younger brother Dan Made 27 saves for the Blue.
Zach Elwell and Andrew Dove also scored for Swampscott; winger Steve Santanello had three assists.
The Big Blue will entertain Everett Wednesday night at Salem State.
Marblehead 5 Agawam 1
At Salem State Saturday, the Magicians rolled up five first-period goals and then cruised to the win.
Marblehead can lock up a spot in the tournament with a win or a tie tonight against Winthrop.
“We did some good things, we had a good start, but there are still a few things we can clean up moving forward,” Marblehead coach Bob Jackson said.
Braden Haley scored twice and had two assists, Drew Cioffi had a goal and two assists and James McCarthy had two helpers for the winners. Aidan Gillis and Sam Cioffi also scored goals for Marblehead (9-6-3).
Danvers 4 Gloucester 0
Yegor Bublik was perfect in the net and the Falcons got two scores from Tom Mento en route to the win.
Danvers is now 11-3-2, and in control of its own destiny in the hunt for the Northeastern Conference/North crown.
The Falcons, who also got goals from Nic DiSciullo and Jack Pinho, are ahead of Winthrop by two points for the title, with a potential winner-take-all game set for Wednesday night between the two teams.
The Vikings have a game in hand, and play Marblehead Monday night.
“(It was a) good defensive effort, that was the key, and of course Yegor in the net,” Danvers coach Steve Baldassare said. “We’re in the driver’s seat, and that’s where we want to be heading into the Winthrop game.”
Saugus 5 Revere 4
At Cronin Rink in Revere, the Patriots played a heck of a game on Senior Night in Revere, according to coach Joe Ciccarello, but could not knock off the Sachems.
“We played very well against a good team, they’ve really had our number and blown us out the last few times we played,” Ciccarello said. “Tonight we played hard, made it 3-3, but then they went up (4-3) and got an empty net goal (5-3), we scored to make it 5-4, and were pressing, but couldn’t get the tying goal.”
Mike Goroshko had two goals, Mike Giordano had a goal and two assists, and Jim Pandolfo also scored for the Patriots who fell to 6-9-1. Revere has to win out the remainder of their games to make the playoffs.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Lynn/Winthrop 2 Medford 0
Gretchen Howard picked up another shutout, and she got offensive help early in the game from Katie O’Shea and an Abby Stafford goal on the power play in a 2-0 win over Medford.
Coach Anthony Martucci said the team sagged a little in the second and third after playing a solid first, jumping out in front of the Mustangs by a pair of goals.
“It was a little sloppy in the second and third, thankfully we had a lead and we were able to hang on,” Martucci said. “We have to play better Monday night against Belmont if the weather cooperates and we can play that one.”
Mia Price had a pair of assists for the winners, who improved to 10-4-0.
St. Mary’s 1 Arl. Cath. 1
On Senior Night with the home team recognizing its five seniors (Brittany McPherson, Adara Nazarian, Emily Stephenson, Sarah Ryan and Ashley Wojewodzic), the Spartans tied up Arlington Catholic, 1-1.
Zoe Solomons, the freshman from Saugus, scored 44 seconds into the second period, with an assist from Ryan, to offset a Cougar goal late in the period.
“We played well on both ends of the ice,” Spartans coach Frank Pagliuca said. “We just ran into a very hot goaltender.
“We were able to get a point in the league, and now we have a big game next weekend with Austin Prep for the title,” he said.
The Spartans have a non-league game against Quincy on Wednesday as a tuneup for the game against Austin Prep next Saturday at Essex Tech.
Beverly 1 Masconomet 1
Izzy Primack scored the only goal of the game for the visiting Panthers in a 1-1 tie with Masconomet. Beverly is 14-0-3 with four games left in the regular season.
“They (Masco) always play us tough up there, and yesterday was no different,” Panthers coach Brian Seabury said. “We didn’t play great, their goalie played very well for them, they always seem to give us some trouble no matter where we play them.”
Molly Hamor and Brittany Foster picked up assists on Primack’s goal.
Peabody 4, Oakmont 1
At McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody, the Tanners got another strong game in the net from Abby Buckley.
Carolyn Garofoli had the hat trick and Sammie Mirasolo added the other score to lead the offense.
“We have a tough league game against Medford on Wednesday night,” said coach Michelle Roach. “We’ll have to continue to play with a sense of urgency and make sure we’re doing the little things over the next couple weeks if we want to get to where we want to be.
