NORWELL — Lynn Classical junior Elie Kalambayi placed fourth overall in the triple jump at the New England Interscholastic Track and Field Championship at Norwell High Saturday.
Kalambayi eclipsed his previous personal best, and also topped his own school record of 44-7½, with a 46-6 3/4 to qualify for the New Balance Nationals Outdoor Track Meet that will take place in Greensboro, N.C. June 16-18.
Kalambayi is only in his second year of track, making it only as far as states last year, which took place at Norwell High School as well.
Last year, Kalambayi struggled, and ended his season at the states.
“This year,” said coach Angel Melendez, “making it to the New Englands was one of his top goals because he wanted to redeem himself on the same field as last year.”
Last week in the all-states, Kalamayi jumped the 44-7½.
After last week, nationals was the new goal.”
Kalambayi made his record-setting jump on his third try.
