The Classical baseball team pulled out a close win, 6-4, over a good Marblehead team on the road on Monday afternoon.
Junior catcher Matt Lauria and senior first baseman Andre Gaudet led the way on offense, each going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Brandon Devin also had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Matt Stanley got the win on the mound for the Rams (4-3), giving up three runs with two strikeouts over five innings. Sean Bean came on in relief and earned the save, pitching the final two innings, giving up one run and striking out two.
Lynn English 6, Salem 5
The Bulldogs were sparked by a three-run inside-the-park home run by Wilbur Rosario, which gave English (3-4) the lead late in the game. Brett Molea also contributed offensively, finishing with two hits, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Denny Santana got the win on the mound after giving up one run on three hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief work.
Beverly 14, Swampscott 6
The Panthers were led by sophomore Spencer Brown, who contributed on both sides of the field. Brown had three hits on the day, including a home run, as well as four RBI, and got the win on the mound, pitching three innings of scoreless relief. Beverly is now 4-3 with the win.
The Big Blue (5-2) made 11 errors en route to the ugly loss on the road. Louis Oliveri went 2-for-3 with a triple, and Leo Wile had two doubles and a walk.
Peabody 9, Winthrop 6
The Tanners (4-3) got solid offensive games from Chris Gillen, who went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored, Jake Doherty, who went 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored, Jon Lawrence, who went 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases and two runs scored and Eric DeMayo who had two hits, including a home run. Pitcher Pat Maguire got the win on the mound, pitching four innings of relief, giving up four hits and striking out six batters.
Bishop Fenwick 9, Arlington Catholic 6
The Crusaders improved to 4-3 on the year behind a solid pitching performance from Simon Gonzalez, who went six innings and gave up just four hits with six strikeouts and earned the win. RJ Libby led the offensive efforts with three hits, while Jimmy Moore and Dan Mastromatteo had two hits each.
Xaverian 4, St. John’s Prep 0
The Eagles (6-2) were the victims of a one-hitter on Monday at home against Xaverian. St. John’s pitcher Colin Nye pitched well in the defeat.
