The Lynn Classical baseball team was clicking on all cylinders on Patriots Day morning, taking down Northeastern Conference foe Swampscott, 7-2, on the road to remain undefeated at 4-0.
David Barnard had a big day on the mound and at the plate, tossing a complete game and giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits with eight strikeouts and also going 1-for-4 with a run scored. Herbie Newton went 2-for-2 with two walks, three runs scored and a two-run home run and Andrew Moccia went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a big two-run double to break the game open in the seventh inning, while Tyler Way (2-for-4) and Kevin Durant (2-for-3) each had one RBI.
For Swampscott (2-1), Luke Marshall went six innings on the mound and gave up 10 hits. Ryan Graciale went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Louis Olivieri (1-for-4), David Peterson (1-for-3) and Spencer Perkins (1-for-3) each had a hit in the loss.
Classical will visit Salem on Wednesday, while Swampscott will travel for a road game against Medford on Wednesday.
Lynn English 9, Winthrop 6
Julio Figuereo got the win on the mound in relief for English on Monday, and he also had two RBI at the plate to help lead his team. Figuereo came on in relief of starter Geraldo Rojas, who pitched the first five innings. Rojas also had two hits and two RBI in the win. Dax Billingsley got the save for the Bulldogs.
English (3-1) will take on Gloucester at Fraser Field on Wednesday.
St. John’s Prep 5, Lincoln-Sudbury 0
Casey Bussone got the win on the mound for the Eagles, tossing a complete game shutout with six strikeouts. Andrew Selima had two hits and two RBIs and Joe Muzio also had two hits.
St. John’s has a quick turnaround with a road game against Chelmsford this afternoon.
Beverly 8, Saugus 7
Mike Urbanski got the win in relief for the Panthers (3-1), pitching three innings out of the bullpen. Spencer Brown had a big day with two doubles and a single, but the biggest hit came from pinch-hitter Jesnel Soto, who hit a game-changing double in the seventh inning.
Beverly will go up against Danvers at home on Wednesday.
Peabody 9, Malden 0
Behind a big bat from Chris Gillen and some lights-out pitching, the Tanners remained undefeated after blanking Malden on Monday. Gillen went 3-for-5 with four RBI to pace the offense, while Pat Maguire got the win on the mound with five innings pitched. Maguire and reliever Will Diezemann combined for a two-hitter in the win.
For Malden (1-3), relief pitcher Kyle Twomey had an impressive performance, going 5 2/3 innings and giving up just four hits and one earned run with six strikeouts. Malden will take on Swampscott on Wednesday.
Salem 15, Everett 14
Salem will host Lynn Classical at Bertram Field on Wednesday.
