SAUGUS — A Massachusetts National Guard Army Blackhawk helicopter will land in the baseball field at World Series Park during a ceremony to honor veterans in September.
The helicopter is just one of many things in store for Veterans and Military Appreciation Day on Saturday, Sept. 16. Guests will also watch parachutists land on the field and a concert by the U.S. Navy Band.
“The goal of the event is to have the community come together to honor our veterans and active military,” said Bob David, superintendent of the park.
Beginning at 10 a.m., military vehicles, classic cars, and a parade of motorcycles will be on display. Drill teams and marching units will perform, and there will be military re-enactments throughout the day.
Tom Rosa and Company, Beat ConnXtionz Dance Company, a moonbounce, and costumed characters will provide all-day entertainment. There will also be raffles, food, and drinks. Veterans will eat and drink for free.
The annual Saugus Alumni baseball game will be played on the field.
A POW/MIA stadium seat will be unveiled and dedicated by the Saugus Veterans Council and a commemorative ceremony will take place starting at 11 a.m., which will include a torch lighting and balloon release. Richard Kent, a Purple Heart recipient who served in Afghanistan, will be the honored guest.
The Senior Tones, a doo-wop singing group, will perform music from the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s. Television personality Barry Nolan will serve as the master of ceremonies.
Wheelabrator Saugus, an energy-from-waste company, will sponsor the event.
