NAHANT — A diver died after running out of oxygen and being thrown against rocks while attempting to surface on Saturday.
The man has been identified by the Essex County District Attorney’s office as Vinicius O. Vianna, 38, of Danvers. Authorities described him as an experienced diver, who was certified as a rescue diver.
At about 4:43 p.m. on Saturday, Nahant Police responded to a call from a woman who reported she was off the coast of East Point with two scuba divers in the water. She reported one of the divers was unresponsive, authorities said.
The Nahant Harbormaster vessel was dispatched to the scene and pulled both divers out of the water. The two divers were taken to Salem Hospital for treatment, where Vianna was pronounced dead. The other diver, a 42-year-old Bedford man, was treated for exhaustion, but was conscious and alert, authorities said.
