SAUGUS — The Everett teenager charged in connection with an early Monday morning break-in at Dick’s Sporting Goods at Square One Mall has been held without bail following his arraignment.
The 16-year-old, whose name was not released by authorities, was arraigned on gun charges in Lynn Juvenile Court on Tuesday, and ordered held pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Friday, June 23, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s office.
He is facing charges of breaking and entering in the night time for a felony, wanton destruction of property over $250, carrying a firearm without a license and possession of ammunition without a firearm identification card, according to the DA’s office.
The arrest came after an hours-long police standoff at Square One Mall on Route 1, which was shut down by authorities and mall management, after police received a report of a break-in at Dick’s Sporting Goods. Police reported that after arriving on scene, an officer saw a broken window, evidence of a break-in and a young man with a long gun and several bags that appeared to contain ammunition.
Police released a statement around 7 a.m. that a search, which included a SWAT team, was on in the mall for an armed and dangerous intruder, which ended around noon with the teen’s arrest. The mall reopened around 1 p.m.
Saugus Police later reported the department had recovered the gun stolen from Dick’s Sporting Goods. The bolt action rifle, which police confirmed was part of the store’s inventory, was found in a wooded area near the Square One Mall early Monday evening. Other evidence of the break-in and burglary was also recovered, police said.
No other guns are believed to be missing from the store.
