SAUGUS — Hundreds are expected to lace up their sneakers for a tradition to start off the new year.
First Day Hikes originated in Massachusetts 26 years ago at Blue Hills Reservation, a 6,000-acre State Park in Milton. But many Saugonians reported their family memories of a New Year’s Day hike at Breakheart Reservation long before that.
The hikes, hosted by the Department of Conservation and Recreation, quickly became popular among rookie hikers and seasoned pros. In 2012, Massachusetts challenged the rest of the country to hold a hike in all 50 states. It has since been an annual event held at state parks nationwide; seven in Massachusetts.
“It’s a great opportunity for families to come out and enjoy the outdoors after feasting on holiday meals,” said Julie Martin, DCR’s director of visitor services. “People like to start their resolution by being healthy and outdoors and leading a healthy lifestyle.”
The event has attracted upwards of 200 nature lovers to the 652-acre state park located in Saugus and Wakefield, she said.

Participants will meet at the Christopher P. Dunne Visitor Center leading up to the 11 a.m. start time. The center will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. DCR staff will lead the group on a two-mile loop throughout the park, following the paved roads. Once the hikers return to the Visitor Center, they can warm up by the fire with a cup of clam chowder donated by Kelly’s Roast Beef, a sandwich shop that dates back to 1951 when its original location opened on Revere Beach.
The Friends of Breakheart will assist with serving and other accommodations.
“The hike is also a reminder to people that we are a four-season operation and we encourage people to use our parks all year long,” Martin said.
The hike will be canceled if the weather is icy. Call the First Day Hike Information Hotline at 617-626-1450 for updates.
