Lynn Tech’s Justin Lewis was named the Commonwealth Athletic Conference track MVP.

Lynn Tech’s Justin Lewis set a school record and a Commonwealth Athletic Conference meet record with a high jump of six feet, 10 inches at the CAC championship meet Saturday. He was also named the CAC’s most valuable player, leading the Tigers to a fourth-place finish. Lewis also finished second in the 100-hurdles (16.52 seconds), second in the triple jump (42-1) and tied for sixth in the 400-hurdles (1:04.76).
Akeem Blake placed second behind Lewis in the high jump (5-10) and third in the 100 (11.71). Steffan Gravely finished fifth in the 100 (11.90), Jamie James was second in the 200 (23.35), Dalvin Howard was sixth in the 800 (2:17.47), Edgar Ortega was fifth in the mile, Brendon Mendez was sixth in the 2-miles, Michael Anaya placed fifth in the long jump (19-4), Devin Phean was fourth in the discus (108-4) and fifth in the javelin (120-03), and Jahvon Van was third in the triple jump (42-01). Elvin Gonzalez made states in the 400 (55.19), finishing sixth. He also tied for sixth in the 400 hurdles (1:04.76).
The 4×100 relay team of James, Robert Woodley, Gravely and Blake placed second (46.64) as well.
For the Tech girls, the 4×100 relay team of Makalay Handley, Michayla Lawrence, Shaneil Nelson and Fraciny Lechtenberg made states and finished sixth with a time of 55.18. Lawrence placed seventh in the 100 (13.66), Lechtenberg was 11th in the 200 (28.94), Massa Freeman was 12th in the 400 (1:10.01), Handley was second in the discus (78-01) and seventh in the shot put (25-07 1/2) and Nelson was eighth in the javelin (64-06 1/2) as the Tigers finished in ninth place.
Coach John Hogan was voted as Coach of the Year in the CAC.
CATHOLIC CENTRAL LEAGUE
The St. Mary’s girls and boys both placed sixth in the league meet at Bishop Fenwick High School.
For the girls, Larisa Bogomolov won the discus with 95-1 and was sixth in the shot put with a 24-7. Marnelle Garraud won the long jump with a 14-9 and was fourth in the 100 with a 13.1.
Lily Belschner was third in the 100 with a 12.7, which qualified her for the state meet. Kelli Powers was fourth in the discus with a 77-3.
Katie Dixon was sixth in the high jump in with four feet. Grace Couillard was sixth in the 800 (2:55).
The 4×100 relay team of Diana Hallisey, Ivanna Nunez, Garraud and Belschner was sixth; the 4×800 team of Colleen Osbahr, Lauren Gonzalez, Rose Callahan, and Couillard was fifth; and the 4×400 relay team of Samantha Saunders, Bridget Cushing, Aylah Cioffi, and Jada Gutierrez was sixth in 5:25.
For the boys, James Brumfield won the high jump with a 5-8 and was third in both the 100 (11.2) and 100 hurdles (16.3).
Fred Blaise was second in the shot put (42-1), Tony Mwangi second in the 2-mile (10:46, to qualify for the states); Onias Mirbel fourth in the triple jump (39-1, to qualify); Mike Cerulli fifth in the 400 (54.0) and Olu George sixth in the long jump (18’1).
Finn Lacy was sixth in the mile (6:00). The 4×100 relay team of Christian Couillard, George, Mirbel, Cerulli was third (47.3); the 4×800 relay team of Jack Carroll, Rain Dou, Chris Mejia, and Mwangi was fourth (10:07); and the 4×400 relay team of Nic Colacitti, Majak Wol, Mike Katsiris, and Lacy was sixth.
St Mary’s will have 13 athletes running at states.
CAPE ANN LEAGUE
Lynnfield had several notable performances among the boys, according to coach William Wallace.
Drew Balestrieri got a personal best in the shot put (43-11) and finished fourth. The 4×800 relay team of Matt Weiss, Ryan Iapicca, Chris Kinsleigh and Matt Seelig finished fourth with a time of 8:52. Brendan Bey finished sixth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 61.19.
For the girls, Kate Mitchell took the top spot in the 800 (2:20.38). Lexi Yannone placed ninth in the 400 (1:05.50) and Juliana Passatempo placed seventh in the 400-hurdles (1:12.71).
CATHOLIC CONFERENCE
The St. John’s Prep track team fell just short at the Catholic Conference championships, coming in second to BC High.
Nikolas Reardon had a big day, taking first in the long jump (21-05 3/4) and second in the high jump (6-4). Jay Carnevale won the discus (126-09) and came in second in shot put (48-03 1/4), with teammate Kevin Doherty placing third (47-09). Tristan Shelgren finished first in the mile (4:24.01) and McGrath Bissailon placed third (4:35.93). Jackson Skelley won the 2-miles (10:05.30).
Other second-place finishes for the Eagles included Andrew Coutu in the 400 (51.91),
Nate Hobbs in the triple jump (46-07 1/2) and Nick Farina in the javelin (157-01). Other third-place finishes included Matt Flynn in the 110-hurdles (16.54) and Aidan Kelly in the 200 (23.74).
SOFTBALL
Saugus 7, Whittier Tech 3
After losing to Whittier last weekend, the Sachems handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season after they won 17-straight.
Brooke Westmoreland did her part to contain the Whittier lineup, going the distance and allowing five hits and a walk, striking out six. She improves to 10-4 in the circle.
Emma Howard (3-for-4, RBI) and Mikayla Niles (3-for-4, 2 RBI) smacked back-to-back home runs. The slugging Sachems also got a home run from Caity Sheehan, her seventh of the season. Alex Almquist went 2-for-4 with a triple.
Saugus is 13-5 with two games left to play in the regular season.
Bishop Fenwick 9, Matignon 1
The Crusaders saw good games from Lexi McNeil (2-for-2, 2 runs, RBI), Allie Giguere (2-for-3, run, RBI) and Julia Fusco (2-for-4, run, 2 RBI). Alexcea Glynos went all seven in the circle, allowing four hits and striking out 11.
BASEBALL
Masconomet 4, St. Mary’s 2
The Spartans got RBI singles from Jack Ward and John Mulready early in the game, but couldn’t get much else going offensively as they fell to 13-5. Matt Costanza pitched well but took the loss, going five innings.
St. John’s Prep 8, St. Peter Marian 4
Behind a big day from the top half of the lineup, the Prep cruised to a non-league win on the road.
Mike Yarin drove in four runs on two hits, including a home run. Jack Arend (1-for-3, walk, 2 runs) and Chris Francoeur (2-for-4, 2 runs) got on base in front of Yarin all day. Sean McGinnis went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Chris Murphy was solid on the mound, earning the win. He went five innings and and allowed one run on six hits, striking out two.
Beverly 9, Gloucester 2
Rocky Pisa went the distance on the mound, picking up his fifth win. He allowed five hits and two walks, striking out nine.
Spencer Brown had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two. Sean Hanlon knocked in four with two hits, one of which was a home run, and Matt Manzo drove in two runs with a double.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Beverly 13, Peabody 3
The Tanners (12-4) lost eight opening draws to start the game, and the Panthers built a sizable lead before Peabody could catch up, capitalizing on Peabody turnovers. Jillian Amirault, Amanda Bradley and Chloe Gizzi scored for the Tanners.
