REVERE — Joseph Boncore of Winthrop won the vacant senate seat in the First Suffolk and Middlesex District defeating former Revere Mayor Daniel Rizzo.

The seat was previously held by Anthony Petruccelli of East Boston who resigned to become a lobbyist.

Since no Republicans competed, Boncore, a Democrat, is expected to win handily in the final election scheduled for May 10.

In addition to Boncore and Rizzo, the candidates vying for the seat included Lydia Edwards, East Boston attorney; Diana Hwang, founder of Asian-American Women’s Political Initiative; State Rep. Jay Livingstone, Revere City Councilor Steven Morabito and Paul Rogers of Boston.

In Revere, Rizzo received 2,643; Boncore, 869; Livingstone, 753; Morabito, 549; Hwang, 314; Edwards, 236; and Edwards, 18.

In Winthrop, Boncore received 2,123 votes; Rizzo came in fourth with 277 votes; Hwang, 349 votes; Livingstone, 292; Edwards, 217; Morabito, 19; and Rogers, 10.
