BOSTON — A Revere man was indicted Thursday in connection with operating illegal video slot machines out of an East Boston social club and assaulting a member of the club.
John Lightbody, 53, of Revere, was indicted by a Suffolk County Grand Jury on charges of assault and battery on a person over sixty, unlawful operation of a gaming device, keeping a place for registering bets and keeping a gaming house or apparatus used for gaming.
“Underground gambling operations used to launder money, fund criminal activity, and put people at risk have no place in Massachusetts,” Attorney General Maura Healey said in a statement.
Lightbody will be arraigned at a later date in Suffolk Superior Court.
The State Police Special Services Section began investigating Lightbody in January 2016 after the Boston Police were called to an East Boston social club for a reported assault and battery. Authorities allege Lightbody assaulted a 64-year-old club member after the two argued about the two video slot machines Lightbody owned and operated inside the club, according to the Attorney General’s office.
