MARBLEHEAD — Police are warning residents that the grandparent scam is back in town.
If someone receives a call saying their grandchild is under arrest and needs bail money to get out, think twice before sending any money, police said in a statement.
Many people don’t and end up sending their money to the scam artist, a criminal.
When someone is arrested, they are able to use the phone to arrange for bail money. If in doubt, look up the name and number of the police department supposedly holding the loved one and ask them to verify it. Police also suggest that a person call other family members to find out where their loved one really is.
“Think twice,” police said in the statement. “Keep your money where it belongs, in your pocket, not theirs.”
