Independence Day celebrations kick off today in Lynn and surrounding communities. Here is some of the fun planned in honor of the nation’s birthday.
LYNN — White Rose Coffeehouse on Sunday offers brunch and a musical performance by Dave Simmons. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Lynn Fireworks Fund.
On Monday, Lois Lane and the Daily Planets, a class rock, R&B, blues, pop, and jazz band, will be performing from 7-9 p.m. at Red Rock Park Reservation.
Fireworks display follows the concert at 9 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. with the best viewing along Lynn Shore Drive. Residents are encouraged to walk to the event: Lynn Shore Drive and surrounding streets will close at 7 p.m., and remain closed until after the show.
MALDEN — One again this year, each of Malden’s eight wards will be abuzz with activity with a fun and exciting celebration in a park in each ward including games, contests, activities, food and fun for kids, adults and everyone in between. Look below to see which one is closest to you.
The city kicked off five days of celebration Friday with the reading and exhibition of the first-in-Massachusetts “Instructions to the Citizens” where Malden declared its bid for independence on May 26, 1776, six weeks before the July 4 declaration in Philadelphia.
On Monday, July 3, outdoor movie night at Green Street Park starting at sundown.
Tuesday, July 4 starting at 9 a.m. at Devir Park outdoor fun including 2nd annual middle school 3 on 3 basketball tournament, games, obstacle course, trackless train, bounce house and food. Tuesday, July 4, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Amerige Park, free food, races, basketball free throw and more fun.
Sunday, July 2, 9 a.m. activity start at Coytemore Lea Park.
Tuesday, July 4, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Forestdale Park with competitive races, doll carriages, wagon, tricycle and scooter parade and “most patriotic” contest.
Saturday, July 1, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. activities at Trafton Park.
Sunday, July 2, noon at Suffolk Manor Senior Housing pre-4th celebration.
Tuesday, July 4, 8:45 a.m. activities start at Linden Park with races, egg toss, bike and doll carriage decorating contest.
MARBLEHEAD — Families can attend the Sunday, July 2 Festival of Arts, 11 a.m. -5 p.m., along lower Washington Street, to enjoy live music, street performers, and works by local artisans. Friends can enjoy a display of creative costumes during the Horribles Parade, on Tuesday, July 4 at 9 a.m. The 2017 4th of July Fireworks and Harbor Illumination display will take place at 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4.
NAHANT — The July 3 Horribles Parade at 6 p.m. on the stage at the Compost Area. A road race will be held on Tuesday, July 4 at 8 a.m. at the fire station. At Flash Road Fields at 9 a.m. there will be town races and egg toss. Spectators can enjoy the fireworks display at Bailey’s Hill at 9 p.m.
PEABODY — As has been tradition, Peabody’s six ward councilors will be hosting their own, unique Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday morning, July 4:
Ward 1 — 9 a.m. to noon at Raddin Park.
The Horribles Parade starts at 9 a.m at the Corner of Blair Terrace and Lynnfield Street. Games include a 50-yard dash, 3-point contest, potato sack race, pie eating contest, and an egg toss. Hot dogs, chips, drinks, and slush will be provided.
Ward 2 — 9 a.m. to noon at the Welch School and O’Connor Park.
The day begins with a patriotic parade at 9:15 a.m. at the front of the school. Field games, basketball contests, pony rides, balloon artist, face painting, art activity and a bunny petting area will take place beginning at 9:45 a.m. Kids can explore a fire truck and see a police vehicle throughout the morning. Pizza, soft drinks, refreshments, cookies and ice cream will be served free of charge beginning at 11:15 a.m.
Ward 3 — 9 a.m. to noon at Connolly Park.
A horribles parade, races, and egg toss are a few of the activities planned. Hot dogs, cotton candy, popcorn, and drinks will be served.
Ward 4 — 9 a.m. to noon at Emerson Park.
Events planned are road races and games with ribbons to the winners. There will be face painting, tattoos and other events. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, and ice cream donated by Treadwell’s Ice Cream will be served.
Ward 5 — 9 a.m. to noon at Lt. Ross Park (Cy Tenney Park).
Events start with the Police Escorted Bicycle, Tricycle & Doll Carriage Parade starting from the Kiley Brothers administration building to the park. Decorate your entry with a patriotic theme. After the parade the fun continues with a DJ, games, nickels in the hay, basketball shootout and more. At 11 a.m., they will start serving lunch featuring hot dogs and pizza. Beverages will also be provided.
Ward 6 — 9 a.m. to noon at Symphony Park.
The activities planned will be the traditional Doll Carriage, Bicycle and Tricycle Parade. Following the parade there will be races, face painting, nickels in the hay, moon bounce, and a basketball free throw contest. At 11:15 a.m., there will be lunch featuring Santarpio’s pizza, cookies, soft drinks and ice cream. Curious creatures will be appearing from 10-11 a.m.
SAUGUS — A community celebration will take place July 4, 12-3 p.m. at 8 Prospect St. Attendees can expect free music, food, games and a bounce house.
SWAMPSCOTT — Musicians A Frayed Knot are rocking out for an outdoor show at the Swampscott Club on July 3 from 5:30-8 p.m. Weather permitting, fireworks take place at 9 p.m.
Fourth of July races hosted by the town take place Tuesday at Phillips Park, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
