LYNN — A 31-year-old man was arrested after robbing a woman, taking off in a stolen car, and leading police on a pursuit early Monday morning.
William Leger, of Everett, was charged with unarmed robbery, receiving a stolen motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended license, and on other motor vehicle violations and warrants.
Police responded to Green and Union streets on a report of a robbery at 2:36 a.m. Officers learned that a 34-year-old woman was sitting in a car with Leger and using narcotics for several hours before the robbery, Lynn Police Lt. Michael Kmiec said.
After using drugs, Leger wanted the woman to go out and get more money, but she refused, and the pair got into a fight. He ended up stealing the woman’s purse and took off in a stolen car. Police don’t think the woman knew the vehicle was stolen, Kmiec said.
The woman had left her phone inside the car before getting out, so she flagged down someone who called police, Kmiec said.
Police pursued the stolen car through Swampscott and into Salem, where Leger was arrested. He had driven into a construction site and couldn’t go any farther, Kmiec said.
