MALDEN— It was certainly a special day for the many who came to honor the members of the Class of 2017 at Malden Catholic High School Saturday.
That theme played well among a number of those who spoke at the 82nd Commencement Exercises — that this was a special group of young men who left their own indelible marks on the fabric of the school community in their four years of contributions and achievements.
Some 136 members of this year’s graduating class received diplomas on Saturday, a group that earned their description as “special” according to headmaster Thomas J. Doherty III. “You have achieved much as a group and much as individuals,” Doherty told the graduates. “Your future is bright as you go on to your higher pursuits.”
The full weekend of honors for the Class of 2017 began Friday evening with the traditional Baccalaureate Mass attended by graduates and their immediate families. A unique slideshow was shown depicting the highlights of the past four years.
Saturday’s commencement was in the Gerald and Marilyn Doherty Gymnasium at the school. Following an invocation by Principal Bro. Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed.d, Class Salutatorian Daniel Barletta, the second-ranked student in the Class of 2017 delivered his address. Barletta spoke of the closeness that has defined this year’s senior and the “special memories we have shared together.”
Headmaster Doherty then conferred diplomas on the graduates, with an individual biography read for each graduating senior. The 14 international student graduates matriculating far from their homes in China had dual bios read as a special treat, first in their native Chinese dialect, then in their adopted language of English.
The top-ranked student in the Malden Catholic Class of 2017, Max Doherty, of Woburn, in his valedictory address cited the family-like relationships he and others have formed together in their years together at the school.
“As we say goodbye to each other today, we can also say we are truly a family,” Doherty told his classmates and others Saturday. “We have laughed together, prayed together, and cried together. Through all of our time together, most importantly, we have supported each other.”
Doherty said “MC had changed us, and changed us for the better.
“Our years here have been valuable. We have been prepared to have a successful future, all of us.”
In addition to the graduates of the Class of 2017, the Malden Catholic administration also conferred special recognition to the members of the Golden Jubilarian Classes of 1967 from the former Boys Catholic High School and also Girls Catholic High School. The Boys Catholic class was the last to be graduated from the original Charles Street school. The “new” Malden Catholic High School opened on Crystal Street, its present location, in 1968.
