LYNN — Firefighters responded to a fire on Bellevue Road and found a mailman trying to put out the blaze with a garden hose.
Lynn District Fire Chief Arthur Richard said the fire was reported at 119 Bellevue Road, a two-family home, Tuesday afternoon. It started between the first and second floors on the outside of the building. Upon arrival, the postal service worker was hosing it down to keep it in check while waiting for fire trucks.
“It really helps,” Richard said about having assistance from a Good Samaritan.
Everyone was able to get out safely and there were no injuries, Richard said.
“They have some really significant damage, but it could have been a lot worse,” he said.
At least three people and two dogs live in the dwelling, which is assessed at $382,000. Three residents who live in the house declined comment.
The fire was extinguished in 30 minutes by the Lynn Fire Department, which used a Boston Fire Department engine to fight it.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the arson squad.
Residents returned to their home after firefighters left, but there was some additional damage to the building from firefighters opening up walls, Richard said.
Rachel Pasquale, 22, who lives on Larch Road, off of Bellevue, said she saw smoke and fire engines and checked it out.
“You could see smoke coming out of the top vent, but there were no flames,” she said. “In this neighborhood, you know when something happens.”
