SAUGUS — The hunger for news about the fate of the former Hilltop Steak House left some feeling duped when an announcement of the restaurant’s sale Tuesday turned out to be an April Fools’ Day prank.

Rumors circulated on Facebook that the restaurant was sold to the Andelman brothers, of the local restaurant review television show “Phantom Gourmet,” who recently purchased a drive-in movie theater. The rumors traveled as far as North Conway, N.H., to the home of former Town Meeting member Ray Lawrence, who said he heard from several friends from Saugus that there was a meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the restaurant to officially announce the sale to the public.
