LYNN — It was a good day for finding deals and community spirit at the Goldfish Pond Association‘s 36th annual flea market on Saturday.
“We all love it,” said Dave Richardson, who has been affiliated with the association since its beginning over three decades ago. “There’s a lot of spirit, a lot of cooperation among people.”
Kathy Montejunas, charter member of the association and event coordinator, said the Association initially formed to to make the neighborhood safe. As time passed, beautifying the pond area became a priority as well.
All the work done through the association is completed by volunteers, said Montejunas. Money raised through vendor fees at the flea market pays for new flowers and maintaining the outdoor space.
Montejunas said the association has been lucky to retain so many of its original members over the years. Jackie Berman, who was selling fresh baked goods for the event, said she has also been active with the Goldfish Pond Association since first moving to the neighborhood in 1986.
The flea market is one of the organization’s major events of the year. The other events include a planting day in May, the planting of a children’s garden in June and a summertime outdoor movie screening.
Everything from leather cowboy boots to vintage movie posters were on display during a quick browse around the flea market and attendees could take boat rides around the pond.
Montejunas also said a total of $3,000 worth of gift cards donated by local businesses were raffled off throughout the day.
Flea market vendor Hannah Belle Crowley shared a booth with her Pomeranian, Felix.
“I was born here in Lynn,” said Crowley, who has participated in the flea market during previous years as well. “I’m all about Lynn. It’s just a nice community event.”
