NAHANT — Forty Steps Dance Troupe will perform dances from its newest show, Spirits, in Swampscott next week.
It’s a dance collection that pays homage to the ocean and its influence over ghosts moving from the earth to the sky.
The troupe is preparing a performance at Fisherman’s Beach on Humphrey Street. The show, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 6 at 5:30 p.m., is free.
Sallee Slagle, the group’s founder and artistic director, said this is the troupe’s third year performing in Swampscott.
“There aren’t a lot of professional dance companies in the area,” she said. “Events like this introduce dance to more and more people and help contribute to the local cultural scene in a positive way.”
The show is funded by a $600 grant provided by the Swampscott Cultural Council. The council’s mission is to enhance the quality of life for residents by sponsoring and funding community activities.
“This is a family-friendly event that will entertain people of all ages,” she said. “Dance is an important part of life and culture. We are living in troubled times and need to celebrate and enjoy dance and art, which are much-needed bright spots for everyone to enjoy.”
