Cahill flying solo in special race

March 4, 2016 by daily_staff

LYNN — City Council President Daniel Cahill’s name will be the only one to appear on the May 10 ballot for the special election to fill the East Lynn seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

Democrat Alexander Zapata returned nomination papers for the special election to the City Clerk’s office with the signatures of 112 certified voters. A minimum of 150 certified signatures were required.

Zapata said he will not rule out a write-in candidacy for the 10th Essex District seat, but Cahill, a Democrat who has served on the School Committee and City Council for 12 years, has already announced his candidacy.

Cahill, who has been council president since 2014, said he can “hit the ground” running in the state Legislature and continue East Lynn representation provided by former state Rep. Bob Fennell for 21 years.

The special election state primary is scheduled for April 12. Voters have until 8 p.m. on March 23 to register to vote in the state primary and until 8 p.m. on April 20 to register to vote in the final election.
