Arrest made in connection with Revere officer crash

SAUGUS–The search is ongoing for a man police said was involved in a crash that seriously injured a Revere Police officer last week.

A witness reported a sighting of the male suspect, believed to be Michael Gouthro, in Saugus, according to a state police update sent out just after 2:40 p.m on Monday.

A female suspect, Jacqueline Murphy, 32, of Revere, was arrested Monday morning, state police said.

Earlier in the day, Saugus Police and State Police searched Forest Street and Lynn Fells Parkway for Gouthro. He is believed to be the man wanted for assaulting a Revere Police officer with a hypodermic needle during a motor vehicle stop last Thursday, prior to a pursuit that led to the officer crashing in Chelsea.

The officer was treated at Mass General Hospital for serious injuries, but was later discharged and is expected to make a full recovery, Revere Police said.

At about 8:40 a.m. Monday, a State Police trooper attempted to stop a reported stolen 1989 Buick LaSabre on Route 1 South in Saugus. The operator refused to stop and the vehicle sped off down the Lynn Fells Parkway. The pursuit was immediately ordered to be terminated by Troop Headquarters, state police said.

Moments later, a witness told State Police that the suspect vehicle had crashed into another motor vehicle and the male suspect had fled on foot. Murphy, who was wanted on warrants, was located in the vehicle, state police said.

Murphy, who is reportedly the girlfriend of Gouthro, was subsequently arrested and was transported to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, under police guard, where she was treated for a minor injury sustained from the crash. The operator of the other car declined medical attention at the scene, state police said

Murphy was later transported to the State Police Barracks in Danver and will likely be held there, pending arraignment, until Tuesday, state police said.
