SALEM — Brandon Hoar, 61, of Peabody was sentenced to 10-11 years in state prison Thursday for fatally stabbing his 55-year-old girlfriend in June 2015, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s office.
Hoar was convicted of voluntary manslaughter by a jury on Feb. 10, according to the DA’s office and was sentenced by Salem Superior Court Judge Thomas Drechsler.
Hoar was charged with first-degree murder after Peabody Police responded to his home at 1 Gates Road on June 16, 2015 for a well-being check. Officers found Hoar sitting on the front steps and Cheryl Young, his girlfriend of 25 years, in the living room with a knife through her chest, according to the DA.
The victim’s 5-year-old granddaughter, who was the subject of a custody hearing that day in Salem Probate Court, was asleep in the master bedroom. Hoar told police he had stabbed Young the day before, according to the DA.
