One of my all-time favorite episodes of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is ‘The Larry David Sandwich.’
In this episode, Larry has a sandwich named after him, but the sandwich is quite possibly the worst sandwich ever created. The sandwich has whitefish, sable, capers, onions and cream cheese.
Delicious, I know.
After watching the episode, I started to think about some of the gross meals I have had throughout my life.
My least favorite meal has to be my Dominican birthday cake from my eighth birthday.
This cake known as “bizcocho Dominicano” is an unappetizing mix of bland frosting, vanilla cake, with fruit, usually pineapple or guava baked in the middle.
While it may be delicious for some, it makes me cringe when it is brought out for parties.
I shared my cake story with other Item employees and received other gross food tales that may ruin your lunch, for which I am truly sorry.
“The most horrible meal I remember was when my parents actually said we could pick liver or fish, and plopped two big platters on the table. In Central Pennsylvania in the ’70s, fish was really bad. I picked liver and to get rid of it I put a giant piece in my mouth and attempted to swallow. I proceeded to choke completely, until my dad picked me up by my ankles and shook it out!” — Abbe Smith, customer service representative.
“Blood sausage cooked with onions and peppers in a skillet on the stove top. The smell was gross, the taste was worse. Yeck!” — Phil Ouellette, vice president of sales.
“My dad once made corn muffins using actual frozen corn. The muffins had chunks of corn in them. I haven’t been able to eat corn muffins since.” — Bridget Turcotte, reporter.
Item staff members were not the only ones who wanted to share their gross food stories. One of my favorite lunch spots in downtown Lynn, Enzo’s Pizzeria, which I would like to note does not serve gross food, also joined in on the fun.
“The Italian sub is my least favorite dish,” said Gaetano Costa, co-owner of Enzo’s. “It is not a traditional dish, it does not exist in Italy.”
While we certainly remember the best meals we’ve ever had, sometimes it can be refreshing to reminisce on the bad too.
No matter how nauseous they make us.
