NAHANT — A garage fire on Flash Road Thursday afternoon prompted the response of several neighboring fire departments.
At approximately 2:45 p.m., Nahant firefighters responded to a call for a fire that broke out at a garage at 8 Flash Road, which is right down the street from the town’s fire department.
Nahant Engine 32 was first on the scene. The Lynn, Swampscott and Revere Fire departments also responded to the fire. There were no injuries reported and the house did not sustain any damage — the garage is a separate unit from the home — but the garage was damaged, the Nahant Fire Department said.
Firefighters encountered heavy flames throughout the structure and shooting through the roof upon arrival, but were able to extinguish the fire quickly and prevent it from spreading beyond the garage. The blaze was under control within 15 minutes, the fire department said.
The garage is considered a total loss due to heavy fire and smoke damage, the department said.
According to Nahant Senior Firefighter Frank Pappalardo, the homeowner’s father was a fire chief in Revere. The Nahant firefighters were able to get his old fire helmets out of the garage, but they were burned in the blaze. Some children’s toys were also damaged, he said.
While the cause of the fire is under investigation, Pappalardo said a faulty garage door opener is the likely culprit.
“The light up top was probably the hottest part,” he said. “The homeowner said he was having some issues with the garage door so it looks like the light on top of a garage and the automatic door opener was probably where it started.”
