BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to six games with a 76-58 triumph over Concordia College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Monday night at the Meyer Athletic Center. With the win, the Cougars improve to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference, while the Clippers drop to 2-11, 1-6 CACC.
Junior guard Willeen Capehart (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) and freshman forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA) each scored 10 points. Anderson also grabbed seven rebounds.
Caldwell led 18-14 with 11 minutes left in the first half before reeling off a 22-7 run for a 40-21 advantage with 4:39 on the clock. Sophomore guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) hit two three-pointers and had eight points in the run, while junior forward Kaitlyn Lambert (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) scored seven points. Near the end of the half, four more points from Lambert sparked an 8-0 spree as the Cougars took a 51-28 lead into the halftime break. Caldwell made 7-of-9 from three-point range in the first half while scoring 22 points off 16 Concordia turnovers.
Another three by Jones and three points from sophomore center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) gave the Cougars their largest lead of the game, 57-30 with 17:22 remaining. The Clippers did not give up, chipping away at the lead and pulling to within 13, 69-56 with 3:13 left. But Caldwell tallied the next eight points to end the comeback attempt and give the Cougars their ninth win of the season. Caldwell enjoyed a 44-29 rebounding advantage and grabbed 18 offensive rebounds for the game.
Lambert shot 7-of-9 from the floor en route to a team-best 15 points to go with six rebounds. She was one of five Cougars to score in double figures, as Felix tallied 14 points and a game-high 10 boards, Jones finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Concordia's Krystina Agard led all players with 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field.
The Cougars' next game is on Wednesday, Jan. 19, when they host Nyack College in a CACC contest. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
