City voter registration drive Saturday at Stop & Shop

LYNN - More than 42,000 residents are registered to vote in the Nov. 4 election and city workers will register more this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Washington Street side of Stop & Shop.

Residents intending to register should be prepared to provide registration workers with the last four digits of their Social Security number or their driver's license number.

The registration drive, sponsored by Mayor Edward J. Clancy Jr. and the Election Department, is just one of several steps the city is taking to prepare for an election day centered around the selection of a new president.

The deadline to register is Oct. 15. Besides electing a new president and vice president, area voters will choose between U.S. Sen. John Kerry and Republican challenger Jeffrey Beatty, U.S. Rep. John Tierney and Republican Richard Baker and U.S. Rep. Edward Markey and John Cunningham of Revere.

State Rep. Lori Ehrlich faces a challenge from Republican John Blaisdell.

Voters will also weigh in on the ballot questions on eliminating the state income tax, decriminalizing marijuana and banning greyhound racing.
The Lynn Election Department has registered 900 voters since early September when 41,066 residents were registered compared to 29,328 registered in September 2004.

City Clerk Mary Audley urged all residents planning to vote on Nov. 4 to call 781-586-6803 or 781-586-6805 to make sure they are registered to vote and to check on their address status.

The quick call will help ensure voters do not go to polling places only to discover they are not listed on the voting list for that location.

Audley is anticipating crowded polls by preparing additional signs to direct voters to voting stations inside polling places.

St. Pius Church, English High School, North Shore Community College, Breed Middle School and Lynn Vocational Technical Institute field house and annex will all host at least two precinct voting stations.

"I'm sure there are going to be lines. I hope people realize it is not exclusive to Lynn; it's going to be everywhere," Audley said.

" Hopefully they won't commit fraud like in Ohio and tell people to register as a Democrat! Let's let people make up their own mind!!! "
