Family may be charged in Revere house fire

REVERE - The family responsible for a two-alarm fire on Charger Street might have more of a problem than having to find a new home.

Fire Chief Eugene Dougherty said he is considering charging at least one of the adults in the garage fire because there were no fire alarms in the home to warn the residents.

"There were four very small children in the basement apartment," he said.

Five adults and four small children were living at 107 Charger when fire broke out around 2 Friday morning. The garage fire caused $60,000-$70,000 worth of damage according to Dougherty but none of the family members were injured.

"One firefighter was hurt but he remained on duty," he said.

Dougherty said he considered the fire especially egregious because it was caused by one of the adults.
"Improperly disposed smoking material," he said.

Because there were no working fire alarms in the home Dougherty said he could cite the family, however, he admitted it might not mean much in the way of a fine.

"It would be under CMR (the Code of Massachusetts Regulations) so it won't have a lot of teeth," he said.

What upsets him is the fact that one of the adults accidentally set the fire.

"I'm contemplating what I should charge them with," he said.

The CMR is a host of regulations developed by state agencies aimed at setting standards for public safety and health, licensing of professionals, consumer and environmental protection, among others.
