School Roundup: English track squads sweep Classical
At the end of the day, English stood supreme as both the girls and boys track teams claimed victory over rival Classical.
The English boys won 71-51, while the girls won 79-48.
"We had a lot of people step up with important points in second and third place," said English coach Mike Toomey. "We moved some people around and tried to get good matchups. The kids came through today."
For the English girls, the winners were Bianca Fowler, 200 and high jump; Drenusha Jusufi, 300 and 800; Alex Henry, 2-mile; Nina Barone, mile; Ashley Keighley, shot put and 400; and Shakira Llewellyn, discus.
For the Classical girls, the winners were Shamara Lopez, 100 (13.1) and long jump (16-5); Frances Mathieu, triple jump (32-0); Katie Thongchanh, 100 hurdles (19.4); and Lopez, Tia Murkison, Mathieu, and Sarama Faustin, 4x100 relay (54.2).
For the English boys, the winners were Julio Arzu, 100 and 200; Charlie Rucker, shot put and discus; Ricky Kimber, 300 hurdles; Camy Ducasse, 400; Dan Cabe, 100 hurdles; Jesse Birotte, mile; and Kordel Latimer, 800.
For the Classical boys, the winners were Quivari Jackson, triple jump (40-8.5) and long jump (19-4); Thevere Archer, high jump (5-8); Rafael Villatoro, 2-mile (13:01); and Jackson, Calvin Harris, Robert Ramsay, and Kashawn Avery, 4x100 relay (45.6).
BOYS LACROSSE
S'scott 8, Salem 3
At Salem, A.J. Zarinsky recorded two goals and two assists for Swampscott to put his season point total at 90. Also scoring for the Big Blue (10-10) were Ben Wollershied with three goals and John Poth, who tallied a goal and an assist.
Peabody 9, Beverly 5
At Beverly, after trailing 5-1 at the half, the Tanners erupted for eight second-half goals while the defense stymied the Panthers (9-9).
Billy Daly and Derek West led the way for Peabody (13-5), each scoring three goals and recording an assist. Greg Schidler netted two goals while Mike Pennachio added another goal and assist.
In net for Peabody, Justin Famiglietti made 16 saves.
Tewksbury 11, Saugus 5
At Tewksbury, Brett Reid and Gilson Fernandez scored two goals apiece for the Sachems (8-8). The NEC South title-holders got another goal out of Anthony Howell.
Masco 8, M'head 5
At Marblehead, the game was tied, 5-5, at the half, but Masco pulled away down the stretch. Mike Cohn had three goals and Tucker Cohen and Nat Williams, one each, for the Magicians (10-8). Kevin Nesbit had two assists and Matt O'Neil made 17 saves.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Fenwick 12, Dracut 1
At the University of Lowell, six different Crusader (16-2) players scored and Jill DeFrancesco made 11 saves. Bridget Dullea scored four goals, Amelia Santos tallied three, Ellen O'Leary scored twice, and Allie Stote, Rebecca Graves and Maggie Gore all added a goal apiece.
GOLF
Fenwick 137, Trin. Cath. 87
At The Meadows, Fenwick (9-0) stayed undefeated with a big afternoon from Anthony Ricci. Ricci scored 28 points by shooting a 42. Also for Fenwick, Blaine Thibodeau and Steve Cleary each shot a 42 (with 26 and 25 points) and Patrick Riley finished with a 45 and 20 points.
