LCDHC lends a helping cleaning hand

LYNN-The Lynn Housing Authority & Neighborhood Development (LHAND) and Lynn Community Development Housing Corporation (LCDHC), working with Ward 6 City Councilor Peter Capano, addressed a long-standing problem by cleaning up the unused MBTA railroad spur that runs from Summer Street to Bennett Street.

According to Capano, this area had been neglected for many years, become overgrown with brush and was being used as an illegal dumping site.

“The surrounding neighborhood has suffered over the years from the condition of this land,” Capano said. “It was virtually impossible to patrol the area and keep it clean. With the removal of the brush and debris by LCDHC, the area is not only cleaner but this work has increased the visibility which makes the neighborhood safer.”

“The project would not have been possible without the financial support of the Housing Corporation,” said LHAND Executive Director Charles Gaeta. “LCDHC was able to finance the cleanup and we are grateful for their support. The LCDHC has become a real partner with the city in restoring neighborhoods. I know the work in the South Street area meant a great deal to (LCDHC) board member Oliver Toomey, who grew up in this neighborhood.”

The cleanup effort is the initial step of a larger plan being implemented by the LHAND over the next several months to help revitalize this area. A follow-up meeting with the residents will be scheduled in conjunction with Capano. Additional cleanup activities as well as possible grant and loan opportunities through LHAND will be discussed at this time.
