REVERE - As Suffolk County prosecutors move forward with secret grand jury proceedings for people of interest in the murder of Revere Police Officer Daniel Talbot, one of the suspects has already confessed to his role in the homicide, according to a police source.
The only person officially charged in connection to the shooting death of the 30-year-old officer is Derek Lovie, 17, a Revere youth who has had many run-ins with police before. He was charged with being an accessory to murder before the fact and pleaded not guilty during arraignment Tuesday.
Several police sources say two other youths, Robert Iacoviello, 20 and Jimmy Heang, 17, are people of interest in the murder investigation. Sources point to Iacoviello as the alleged shooter.
Police also arrested Heang's brother, Dararin Heang, 19, when police raided their home at 167 Cooledge St. around 5:30 a.m. Monday. So far, the brothers are only facing drug charges and having an illegal stun gun.
The suspect who gave the confession was whisked away to another facility earlier in the week, according to the source.
Also around 5:30 a.m. Monday, State and local police searched the home of Iacoviello at 59 Thurlow Ave. Neighbors told the Item police appeared to enter the home through the basement, where Iacoviello lived with his father and step-mother.
Since the shooting occurred in the baseball field of Revere High School around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, police scoured the area and questioned many people. The weapon used in the shooting, a nine millimeter handgun that had been smashed up since the incident, according to a source, was found in a storm drain on Charger Street.
According to Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley, the bullet recovered from Talbot's head was from a nine-milimeter handgun. The Revere Police Department-issued weapon is a .45-caliber Glock semiautomatic.
Conley said Monday Talbot and three other off-duty officers were socializing in the baseball field after dining at Margarita's restaurant, which is across the street. At some point, the officers saw Lovie walking across the field and words were exchanged.
Lovie left the area and returned with a group of three men in their late teens or early 20s, and one of those men fired the fatal shot, which hit Talbot in the head, Conley said.
One of the officers returned fire before the suspects ran away.
Meanwhile, another officer fled the area and was picked up by police down the street a short time later, according to a source.
Another officer and Talbot's fiancé, Connie Bethell, 28, were also present at the shooting.
