Residential fire in Peabody displaces residents

PEABODY — The Peabody Fire Department responded to a three-alarm fire early Friday morning. The roof of 4 Sanborn St., a triple decker, collapsed and all six residents have been displaced. There were no injuries reported.

Peabody Fire Chief Joe Daly said the call came in around 3 a.m. after a resident’s dog began barking to alert them of the fire. Fire departments from Lynn, Lynnfield, Danvers and Salem were able to provide assistance, he said.

Weather conditions were good for fighting the fire and keeping it from expanding, he said. The triple decker is near the Leo’s Metro Bowl and the heart of downtown Peabody.

Gabriella Benevides, a resident of the home, said she heard really loud banging on her door around 2:50 a.m. It was from another resident, calling out Benevides’ and her husband’s name.

“As I got up, I went and opened the door and she said, ‘Fire,’” Benevides said. “And the house was full of smoke and I got my daughter out and we’ve been out here ever since.”

Benevides said her and her family have nowhere to go. Daly said the Red Cross was called in for the families.

Captain Chris Dowling from the Peabody Fire Department and a Massachusetts state fire marshal were on the scene later Friday morning to investigate the damage and determine the cause and origin of the fire.

Firefighters were able to recover some of the residents belongings including jackets, passports and bags.

As of Friday evening, Daly said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but they do not suspect anything suspicious. While the triple decker is completely lost, Daly said everyone made it out safe and “the focus was on saving lives and containment of the fire.”
