NAHANT — A 25-year-old Cambridge woman is being treated at Massachusetts General Hospital for injuries sustained in a kitesurfing accident that also injured a bicyclist.
The woman, who was kitesurfing at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday, was quickly blown toward the shore in the area of Doggie Beach, coming in at such a high rate of speed that she feared she would be blown into the rocks, said Nahant Police Lt. Joseph “Paul” Manley.
She cut the line to her kite but was still tossed onto the rocks, said Manley. The kite blew over the berm and over Nahant Road, striking a 56-year-old male bicyclist from Marblehead.
“The kite clotheslined the bicyclist,” said Manley. “He had lacerations to his mouth and face.”
They were discovered by Nahant firefighters, who happened to be driving back at the right time, said Manley.
Both were transported to Salem Hospital. The bicyclist was later released. The kitesurfer, who initially only complained of pain to her abdomen, was later transferred to Mass General. She was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit on Monday, said Manley.
